(567 posts)How simple I was.
Then I read some books and watched some news and began to understand the true history of America and the the evil of Jim Crow and marched for voting rights for black Americans. Then I enlisted in the AF to avoid being drafted into a war that had nothing to do with me and observed the banality of the tradition-bound Silent Majority that gave us J. Edgar Hoover and Richard Nixon. I guess you could say that I became woke.

(11,212 posts)But the low-iq, nonthinking crowd whose votes she is seeking just eat this stuff up. She knows that no one who thinks or has morals will ever vote for her, so she trolls the shallow water with crap like this.

(86,356 posts)and my job was studying, getting my homework done, and passing tests. Oh yeah - and feeding the cat. And I never gave a thought to national issues or current events, mainly because I never had to. Cuz I was A KID. That other stuff didnt come into my orbit til high school, when history class included mandatory reading of Newsweek.

(20,694 posts)You evidently never got the memo that some of us had shitty childhoods. Sure, life was comparatively less complicated when I was a kid, but I also had plenty to worry about, like when was my mom going to have another psychotic break and have to be hospitalized again.
Don't get me wrong: there were were some good times as well. But I do not know this simple, easy, carefree time of which you speak. Must have been nice... for people like you.

I remember the Cuban missile crises and one of the kids saying that his mom told him "the bombs would start falling after school let out that day".
I remember some guy flashing my little sisters as they walked home from school.
I remember two Kennedys and Martin Luther King being assassinated.
I remember police attacking marchers with fire hoses and dogs and Billy clubs.
I remember waiting for the draft lottery results.
I remember feeling guilty after the me too movement for not reporting a teenage child molester when I was ten.
And I had a pretty idyllic childhood.
Nicky has either scrubbed her memories or is just reading garbage a speechwriter prepared for her.

(58,046 posts)When I was growing up, there was the Vietnam War and the danger of getting drafted, JFK getting killed, MLK getting killed, Bobby, Sr. getting killed, people still getting shot at the Berlin Wall, Middle East wars, Watergate and ongoing Republican corruption (plus ça change), and the discovery that my country was NOT the only place on earth where one could live.
Haley is selling an America that never existed, and no one remembers except 95 year old former Hollywood scriptwriters.
