They asked who they were speaking to. I asked them who does Medicare have listed for this number, I dont think Medicare calls random numbers. They hung up on me.

(987 posts)Any time I have a question or concern about an unsolicited text or voicemail, I can always call the "real folks" back myself and ask them directly "are you trying to reach me?"

No true. It's a scam. I've gotten that call a few times and after listening a few seconds I tell them not to call me again with this scam, then hang up.

(2,859 posts)I said, "hey if you're from the IRS and know enough to call me, you should already have my SS number". They hung up. Next time the call and ask me I'm going to tell them my SS number is 3.

(15,170 posts)Me: Let's see, you already have that info in front of you, right?
Reply: Well, yes - we just need to verify it's you.
Me: Well then how do I know that you are you? Spoofed phone#s, etc.
This is all part of the charade that the healthcare industry plays to try to satisfy HIPAA requirements. It's a piss-poor way of identifying people. When I go to the hospital and they ask my DOB, I usually subtract 100 years - sometimes the poor receptionist catches the obvious(?) error, sometimes not.
When I go to a particular department in the hospital after being fitted with a wrist-band with my name and DOB and am subsequently asked for the same information, I make a show of saying "Well, let me look at my wrist-band since I'm not sure who I am anymore."

(51,308 posts)And they don't catch that? Really?
Besides, the receptionists, nurses, PAs, etc. don't make the rules. Why give them a hard time? I don't get that.
Why?

(51,308 posts)I'm sure they've never heard those jokes before.
I think that a receptionist would look at you a bit askance if you said 18something for the year, but ok. It's a cool story, and no doubt you make their day!

(3,394 posts)room and we followed the medical assistant to an exam room. She asked his name and date of birth. She then asked our address. Oops! Two men with same name in clinic on the same day, but different birthdays! That's part of the reason why they ask DOB to verify they have the correct records and patient. That was an odd experience; we actually got to meet his "Name" twin before leaving.

(9,805 posts)They make me so mad. Most of the time it is a recorded message, but sometimes they want to send one of their employees out to the house for a home visit. I am cynical enough to think they want to snoop around and try to (a) find ways to deny coverage for certain claims or (b) try to get you to upgrade your policy.

To which I replied: "Well, so am I and I'll kill everyone of the sonsofbitches then I'm coming after you!"

Our local police constantly post about phone scams, and they ask for people to let them know if contacted.
