Florida college students arrange separate commencement, rejecting board's Trumpy speaker
their gofundme account for alternative commencement
https://www.gofundme.com/f/ncf-grad-event-on-our-own-terms Alex Wagner reports that the New College of Florida's class of 2023 are arranging their own graduation commencement ceremony with a special speaker after Ron DeSantis's board imposed one of Donald Trump's dubious Covid advisors as the official commencement speaker. The former coronavirus adviser to Donald Trump supported Ron DeSantis' reopening of Florida during the pandemic. A medical advisor who supported Gov. Ron DeSantis’ anti-lockdown policies during the pandemic will speak at New College’s commencement ceremony. Dr. Scott Atlas will address graduates on May 19 at the Sarasota campus, at the Bayfront historic Ringling mansion. “Dr. Atlas’ perspective and resume are impressive; he is a champion and fighter for free speech and a renowned national leader,” said Richard Corcoran, Interim President of New College. “We are happy to welcome him here at New College, where we place a high value on personal freedom and individual autonomy, as Dr. Atlas does.” The move will likely turn some heads, and the selection leans into the message the one-time haven for liberal students could be taking a hard-right turn. Atlas was appointed in 2020 as special coronavirus adviser to President Donald Trump but quickly resigned amid friction with other public health leaders within the administration, including Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx. Atlas promoted the concept of “herd immunity,” having a wide span of the population develop natural immunity to COVID-19, well before a vaccine was available. https://floridapolitics.com/archives/611083-new-college-to-bring-in-scott-atlas-as-commencement-speaker/

4. "herd immunity"
People much smarter than Dr. Atlas -- which is to say, people of ordinary intelligence -- realized that "herd immunity" doesn't work if getting the disease doesn't give you immunity.

5. Thanks for posting this!
I admire the young folks who are fighting, and the faculty and staff who are trying to hold their ground. It’s a nightmare. Such a great school, ruined.

7. Christian Nationalist Hillsdale College
pushed his agenda here. College would not cooperate with health officials. Hid numbers of infections. Atlas is a Larry Arnn hack.

10. Great! When I heard who the speaker was, I was reminded of a high school class in AL ...
... who put together their own, alternative senior prom after the principal decreed there would be no interracial dates at the official prom. Glad to see these students took the same course.
This is how you let these people know they will be swept away in the backwash of history. |

13. I love this! My whole family was dismayed by the FSU commencement on May 06.
Our middle child earned their bachelor's degree after their brother got his bachelor's and master's degrees there. In contrast to the innocuous speakers of the past, this commencement speaker (Florida's CFO) is an anti-woke wonk in DuhSatan's cabinet. I wanted to claw my brain out through half of his speech.

14. Punchline to this joke: "a champion and fighter for free speech"
It should have read “a champion and fighter for free speech” under our rules, we are the authoritarians! |

15. Civil rights leader Maya Wiley to deliver keynote at New College alternative graduation
https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/news/local/sarasota/2023/05/16/new-colleges-alternative-graduation-to-host-maya-wiley/70223148007/
Organizers of the New College of Florida graduating Class of 2023 student-led "Commencement On Our Terms" have announced civil rights leader and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights Maya Wiley as the keynote speaker at the alternative graduation event on Thursday, May 18. New College graduating seniors and Nova Alliance alumni will host Wiley during the private graduation ceremony offered to this year's New College graduates. Wiley, a nationally known civil rights activist, attorney and professor, will celebrate New College students and recognize the graduates' pursuit of academic freedom, knowledge, and diversity, the sponsors said. “The students at the New College of Florida have achieved amazing academic success in the face of abhorrent challenges. They endured COVID and the politicization of their education. They have advocated tirelessly for the freedom to learn free of politics, for the freedom to be who they are, and for the freedom to fight for a campus community that embraces all who work and learn in it. They have been forced onto the front lines of a war against censorship, fear-mongering, and the rollback of civil rights. It is an absolute honor to be with this incredible class of leaders to celebrate their success and their commitment to liberties that lie at the heart of our democracy,” Wiley stated via a press release. *snip* |
