Prayer vigil held at Tiller’s former abortion clinic
About 100 people gathered Saturday for a prayer vigil outside the building that housed the practice of murdered abortion provider George Tiller to raise awareness that another group is trying to bring abortion services back to the site.
We are saying, No more abortions in Wichita,? said Peggy Elliott, who helped organize the hour-long vigil held on the corner of Kellogg and Bleckley. If it does open, well have people prepared to do sidewalk counseling every day so women dont have an abortion.
Trust Women Foundation recently purchased the building where Tiller practiced until he was shot to death by Scott Roeder in 2009. Julie Burkhart, an abortion-rights activist and former Tiller employee, is director of the foundation.
A Kansas licensing law that could be an obstacle to the clinic providing abortions is being challenged in court. A ruling isnt expected for months.
Other new state laws place strict restrictions on abortions performed after 22 weeks of pregnancy, and they say that minors must now get the permission of both parents before getting a law.
