We need to clean up this planet not some pie in the sky
If I thought like the Texas Governor Id blame that tree for failing when falling.

(276,262 posts)But we disagree on this one.

(43,457 posts)We have a truly atrocious quote from Abbott, and you call out Andres because of a disagreement on the concept of an afterlife?
Just seems to be petty and misguided.

(276,262 posts)There is no heaven in my world view - I believe in cleaning up this planet
My world view is mine - and is neither petty nor misguided. Everyone is entitled to believe what they want.

(43,457 posts)Nothing wrong with believing that.
I just don't know why that's what you decided to take away from that exchange.

(18,210 posts)When Andres said no one is illegal in heaven, I took that as a poetic way of saying that no one should be considered illegal anywhere. I certainly don't think he meant belief in an afterlife means we don't need to clean things up and solve the world's problems in this one, and I'm at a loss as to why you would assume that. I honestly think you have misinterpreted the man's intentions.
I know that not everyone believes in an afterlife, but a large number of people do, and there is a W I D E range of beliefs among them. Many who believe in a hereafter of some sort are also deeply concerned about conditions in this earthly life and working hard to improve things. (One rather famous example: Joe Biden.) If you think that believing in an afterlife and working to improve things in this life are mutually exclusive, I'm afraid you are VERY MUCH mistaken.
malaise
(276,262 posts)and yes there are many people who believe in both but Abbott is not one of them. Those people use religion as a prop - ask Justin Jones - he just called one of them out in their legislature.
On the other hand I'm old enough to remember who sat in the front pews - just like the front of the bus.

(18,210 posts)I was talking about Andres, not Abbott. I thought you were offended by Andres referring to heaven, and that's what I was trying to address.
Greg Abbott is a sick fuck, as far as I'm concerned, and I don't care what his opinion is about anything!
All I was doing was trying to defend Chef Andres, who is a great humanitarian and does a lot to help people. If he's not the one you were offended by, then I must have misread your intentions. Sorry if that was the case.

(276,262 posts)Abbott even hates the effin trees.
Religion is a prop for RWs.

(18,210 posts)As I said, I thought Andres was implying that no one should be considered illegal anywhere. I imagine he thought Abbott needed to hear that. Probably didn't do any good where Abbott is concerned, but any time you tweet something, loads of people see it, not just the person you're tweeting at.
Here's Andres' tweet in its enturety:
Andres is rebuking Abbott in this tweet, rebuking him pretty strongly, not writing him a fan letter or expressing agreement with him. In referring to "heaven," he was using poetic language to tell Abbott he was WRONG. I think that was a fine thing to do, and I'm glad lots of people got to see him do it!

(43,457 posts)Abbott is acting like a false Christian.
Chef Andres--whether you yourself subscribe to any religious belief or not--is reminding him that if he wants to profess to be a Christian, he should first start acting like one.
Not sure how its bad of Chef Andres to point that fact out.
ShazzieB
(18,210 posts)I think Andres was using language he thought Abbott might be able to understand on some level. I'm sure he knew it was very unlikely that Abbott would really hear what he was saying, but some things are worth saying, even if they fall on deaf ears.

(18,210 posts)As I said above, when Andres said no one is illegal in heaven, I took that as a poetic way of saying that no one should be considered illegal anywhere. I thought that was very nice, and I'm baffled at the assumptions some people seem to be making.
The word "heaven" seems to be highly triggering for some people. Who knew?

(18,210 posts)I guess the word "heaven" must carry triggering associations for some people.
When Andres said no one is illegal in heaven, I took that as a poetic way of saying that no one should be considered illegal anywhere, and I thought it was a lovely sentiment. I still do.
I think it's sad the way some are misconstruing the words of this great humanitarian.

Chef José Andrés DESTROYS Texas Governor Gregg Abbott for dehumanizing five Texas mass shooting victims by calling them illegal immigrants.
He also BLAMED Abbotts hateful rhetoric for causing the shooting in the first place.
Nobody is illegal in heaven dear governor! Nobody! Andres wrote.
And in life at the most are just undocumented! You speak with hate about immigrants, and that rhetoric is what may have created this situation in the first place. Show some empathy thats what good leaders do.
The comments came after Abbott announced a $50K reward for info who killed 5 Texas immigrants but disgustingly referred to the murder victims as illegal.
Gregg Abbott is a sick man for seeking to minimize those murdered by insane gun violence he perpetuates.
