Let me be clear, I enthusiastically support Joe Biden for re-election.

There was a lot of doom, gloom and concern on the internets today. Some of it may have been sincere, others I'm not so sure. Let me stake out my position to ANYONE who wants to convince me that he will be a drag on the ticket.

I like Joe.

I WANT Joe to run

He's had an effective first term.

We had the best midterm election since FDR.

America needs decency to remain in the White House.

So if you want to try and give me a reason why he should step aside, I can only say that I respect your opinion but it will only fall on deaf ears.

Period.

End of discussion.

3. Perhaps issues of concern are the following - this is not an opinion; merely a hypothetical

Our representatives are mortals -- RBG, DiFi amongst others. Sometimes people, beyond their physical control, are unable to serve at full capacity. (yes, there are others in both chambers of concern)

If the VP were to have to step in to serve at any moment, the ugly wingnut forces would attempt to steamroll any attempts for her to serve effectively.

And 3rd in line to the presidency is not someone Dems could support, yet the dark money forces would try to install him.

It could get mighty ugly with this hypothetical scenario.

That being said, no matter how healthy or young the Dem candidates are, rethuglicans will use any and all tactics to undermine them.

25. The 3rd in line would remain

3rd in line. If Kamala is thrust into the presidency, she immediately appoints a vice president. Mccarthy would never sniff the oval office.

28. The Presidential Succession Act is confusing. However, Ford was installed based on what you say.

https://www.senate.gov/about/officers-staff/president-pro-tempore/presidential-succession-act.htm

Presidential Succession Act

July 18, 1947

On July 18, 1947, President Harry Truman signed the Presidential Succession Act. The original act of 1792 had placed the Senate president pro tempore and Speaker of the House in the line of succession, but in 1886 Congress had removed them. The 1947 law reinserted those officials, but placed the Speaker ahead of the president pro tempore.

Throughout most of the 19th century, the Senate assumed it was empowered to elect a president pro tempore only during the absence of a vice president. But what should senators do at the end of a session? Since Congress was customarily out of session for half of each year, what would happen in that era of high mortality rates if both the president and vice president died during the adjournment period and there was no designated president pro tempore? For decades, the Senate relied upon an elaborate charade in which the vice president would voluntarily leave the chamber before the end of a session to enable the Senate to elect a president pro tempore. Fearing that the presidency might thus accidentally slip into the hands of the opposition, vice presidents occasionally refused to perform this little courtesy when the opposing party held the Senate majority.

In 1886 Congress replaced the two congressional officials in the line of succession with cabinet officers, in the order of their agencies’ creation. Proponents of this change argued that the Senate elected its presidents pro tempore based on parliamentary rather than executive skills. No president pro tempore had ever served as president, while six former secretaries of state had been elected to that office.

When the 1945 death of Franklin Roosevelt propelled Vice President Truman into the presidency, Truman urged placing the Speaker, as an elected representative of his district, as well as the chosen leader of the “elected representatives of the people,” next in line to the vice president. Since one could make the same argument for the president pro tempore, Truman’s decision may have reflected his strained relations with 78-year-old President Pro Tempore Kenneth McKellar and his warm friendship with 65-year-old House Speaker Sam Rayburn. After all, it was in Rayburn’s hideaway office, where he had gone for a late afternoon glass of bourbon, that Truman first learned of his own elevation to the presidency.

4. I do love Joe but I also really trust him. His political instincts are way underestimated

If he thought he couldn’t win and do the job, and it wasn’t good for the United States, he wouldn’t be running. He’s never lost in a general election,he knows how to win, he’s done a great job. I really think he’s gotten better throughout his term. In spite of all his accomplishments, it’s still very common to underestimate his ability

7. People always underestimate the nice, quite guys.

They equate calmness and self-control with weakness rather than strength. There’s been more than one bar fight where an offending jerk only realized his mistake as he was falling towards the floor.

17. So Good to Read, RandySF!

Joe Biden was my first Choice and I'm so grateful for what' he and his Team Blue have been able to Accomplish in spite of the fascist forces against us.

And, it looks like Pres Biden is set to have Cesar Chavez' Granddaughter as his 2024 Campaign manager.

Biden set to name Julie Chavez Rodriguez as 2024 campaign manager

19. The age reason sounds vague to me, similar to "unlikeable."

Do people think Republicans are going to stop being polarizing and obstructionist, act any differently, if there's a younger Democratic president? What would be so different? This administration is the most diverse ever, lots of young people -- do they think the only person working is Biden, all about him and only him?

If he has any health problems he'll step down. Kamala The Invisible will become president and then everybody can have lots of fun whining about her approval ratings and how they want someone new to primary her in the next election because (fill in the vague reason).

Reagan was senile and G.W. Bush went to beddy-boo really early, like an old person, fell down a lot and choked on a pretzel. No point, I just wanted to say that.

24. I will vote for Joe. I might even volunteer for Joe.

But I don't like the idea of electing someone already in their 80's to a 4 year term. The problem is at that age your margin of error healthwise is very slim. At that age you don't recover as quickly, if at all. But with the best medical care in the world, hopefully Joe can stay healthy.

31. I like Biden, but don't like his age

It's the exact problem as is happening right now with Feinstein. I respect the hell out of what she has accomplished for decades, but at this point her health and mental status has declined to the point she can't do the job.

Feinstein is 89. Biden would be 86 at the end of his term. Of course I don't like that. Not at all.

I will vote for Biden because he is our democratic candidate. But we are lying to ourselves if we think there aren't people who are going to have a serious problem with his age. And saying "oh, no biggie, there's always Kamala waiting to take over in the event something happens to Joe" doesn't work if those same voters would not vote for her outright in a general election for whatever reason (racism, sexism.)

This will be a problem for us with some voters. I hate to say it. We're going to have to fight for every vote this time around. This is going to mean working really hard to get the youth vote, suburban middle class vote, Hispanic vote, Black vote, we can't leave ANYONE out or take any group for granted.
