FBI probe of Petraeus triggered by e-mail threats from biographer, officials say
The collapse of the dazzling career of CIA Director David H. Petraeus was triggered when a woman with whom he was having an affair sent threatening e-mails to another woman close to him, according to three senior law enforcement officials with knowledge of the episode. The recipient of the e-mails was so frightened that she went to the FBI for protection and help tracking down the sender, according to the officials. The FBI investigation traced the threats to Paula Broadwell, a former military officer and Petraeus biographer, and uncovered explicit e-mails between Broadwell and Petraeus, the officials said.
When Petraeus’s name first surfaced, FBI investigators were concerned that the CIA director’s personal e-mail account had been hacked and security had been breached. But the sexual nature of the e-mails led them to conclude that Petraeus and Broadwell were engaged in an affair, the officials said. The identity of the woman who received the e-mails was not disclosed and the nature of her relationship with Petraeus is unknown. The law enforcement officials said the e-mails indicated that Broadwell perceived the other woman as a threat to her relationship with Petraeus. http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/fbi-probe-of-petraeus-triggered-by-e-mail-threats-from-biographer-officials-say/2012/11/10/d2fc52de-2b68-11e2-bab2-eda299503684_story.html?tid=sm_twitter_washingtonpost

5. You think he was getting both? Lining up mistress #2? I love all that "Honor" talk about him.
The ex-admiral on the Ed Show last night talked about how Petraeus had to resign because of his strong sense of honor. I've noticed that about 90% of the time people talk about their codes of honor, it's because they've been caught doing something dishonorable. Don't tell me how honorable your vow-breaking buddy is. Just tell him to shut up, resign, and go home to apologize.

39. I agree
It's total bullshit that they all have a strong sense of honor. It isn't about honor but whether they will get caught. If honor is so high in the military than why do they need the MP's? Why do they need the JAG's? I'm sure that they don't employ the same standards on everyone in the military either.
I think we should respect many that serve in the military but they are not gods. They are not better than everyone else. They should get credit for serving but don't go overboard. |

who may have been having an affair with Petraeus as well, or was seen as a contender to be that...
Did Broadwell really think at all? What a garantuan dumbass to use Pet's accounts. I mean, really. Wouldn't you go to a library (in a mustache disguise, just in case!) and make up a new email account, Then go and do something so stupid? |

I can see the twisted logic of this.
Sent the competitor a "fuck off, we're done" email, pretending to him. Equally, i could see trying to "trump" the other woman by showing off her access to the account, "See, he likes me more, I know his email account & password". |

20. Interesting. Last night I heard that the only way the FBI could investigate Petraeus
is if the CIA invited them in.
So, we find out that Petraeus was not the one initially under investigation which means that the White House would not necessarily have known about this UNTIL they tracked into the computer. So, the fact is, the POTUS probably didn't know until 24 hours before it was announced, just as the official story goes and that it was NOT hidden for the election. |

Last edited Wed Sep 2, 2020, 12:53 PM - Edit history (1) Despite the Times' delicate wording ("a woman with whom he was having an affair sent threatening e-mails to another woman close to him"&341;, it suggests that Broadwell was a mistress scorned. And the fact the "the recipient of the e-mails was so frightened that she went to the FBI" instead of the police suggest that she wasn't a mere civilian any more than Broadwell was.

46. This article says that she WAS a government employee
A senior U.S. military official says the author who had an affair with David Petraeus sent harassing emails to a woman who was the State Department's liaison to the military's Joint Special Operations Command...37-year-old Jill Kelley in Tampa, Fla., received the emails from Petraeus biographer Paula Broadwell that triggered an FBI investigation...(link) This article says that Kelley DIDN'T go to the FBI: House Majority Leader Eric Cantor spoke to an FBI whistle-blower two weeks ago who accused then-CIA Director David Petraeus of having an extramarital affair and potentially jeopardizing the security of classified information...Cantor’s chief of staff, Steve Stombres, later spoke with FBI officials to pass on the accusations from the whistle-blower...(link) Which raises the question of why Cantor didn't inform the one member of Congress who should have been informed: House majority leader Eric Cantor talked to an FBI official in late October about former CIA Director David Petraeus' involvement in an affair, a spokesman for the congressman told CNN Sunday...October 31, Cantor's chief of staff phoned the FBI to inform them about the call between the congressman and the FBI official...(link) Which in turns raises the question of why the commander-in-chief wasn't informed. I love the smell of vindication in the morning. ![]() rocktivity |
