The essence if the story is this: The young man had a cancerous trachea. In Sweden, they are at the brink of perfecting an organ regeneration process using the patient's own stem cells, thereby eliminating rejection issues.
They built a plastic armature - a model of the man's trachea, if you will - on which to grow the new organ. Using a liquid based on the man's stem cells, they poured it over the armature where it grows into a new trachea.
The man is now back home, recovering with all appearances of a complete recovery.
Amazing!

(8,339 posts)occupy the White House. Stem cell research has such incredible potential. Every time a repuke bastard is elected, more people will die. It's as simple as that.

(26,319 posts)I remember reading about a process of "washing" with detergent an existing donor organ. The idea is to use the donor organ as a scaffold to grow a spare compatible organ for someone in need.
Rejection will be a thing of the past.

(3,795 posts)Just don't expect our leaders in Congress to do so.
You don't get to accurately label Republicans when your first priority is bipartisanship.

(1,569 posts)They'll just say that the same results could have come from adult stem cells (in spite of what may be true) or if forced to acknowlege the benefits of fetal stem cells, they'll fall back to the "kill a baby" shrillness. They only seem to get "cured" when they, their children, or their new trophy wife gets saved by the treatment. (OK, they might also decide it is OK if there turns out to be a huge profit or if they can use STEM cells to get an erection).
