THERE IS PRECEDENT for DECLASSIFICATION of translator notes (Gorby-Reagan)Last edited Thu Mar 16, 2023, 06:06 PM - Edit history (1)
This post edited by me, to include new subject line
Interpreters file a Mem Con (memo of conversation) but this article tells us lots more. Many ppl are still inquiring about the Helsinki notes. Excerpt from link below: What might be more useful are the official classified documents, known as "memorandums of conversation" or MemCon's, that are compiled by interpreters using their handwritten notes. ............. My Q after reading this. "Only a president can declassify a Mem Con". Okay, does it have to be the president whose words were translated? Or can it be ANY sitting president? I have written to the ABC journo who wrote the piece to ask that question. [link:https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/interpreter-marina-gross-notes-trumps-putin-meeting/story?id=60374126|

1. note: there is precedent for the declassification of a Mem Con or notes.
"Zarechnak recalls how the MemCon he wrote from his notes of the consecutive translation he took during the one-on-one meetings during the 1985 Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Geneva were declassified 15 years later."
Who was the president that declassified those notes? |
