MEMBERS OF THE South Carolina State House are considering a bill that would make a woman who has an abortion in the state eligible for the death penalty.
The South Carolina Prenatal Equal Protection Act of 2023 would amend the states code of laws, redefining person to include a fertilized egg at the point of conception, affording that zygote equal protection under the homicide laws of the state up to and including the ultimate punishment: death.
The bill was authored by Rep. Rob Harris, a registered nurse and member of the Freedom Caucus; it has attracted 21 co-sponsors to date. (Two former co-sponsors Rep. Matt Leber and Rep. Kathy Landing asked to have their names removed as sponsors of the bill. Leber and Landing could not be reached for comment.)
Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican who represents South Carolina in the U.S. House, took to the floor on Friday to call attention to the bill, which she sees as part of a deeply disturbing trend. (Multiple Texas lawmakers have floated the idea of executing women who have abortions in the past. Those bills, proposed before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, failed.)
To see this debate go to the dark places, the dark edges, where it has gone on both sides of the aisle, has been deeply disturbing to me as a woman, as a female legislator, as a mom, and as a victim of rape. I was raped as a teenager at the age of 16, Mace said. This debate ought to be a bipartisan debate where we balance the rights of women and we balance the right to life. But we arent having that conversation here in D.C. We arent having that conversation at home. We arent having that conversation with fellow state lawmakers.

(3,886 posts)kill a woman for aborting a piece of cellular tissue? Something even smaller than a wart? They already force her to put her own life in danger for that piece of tissue. Her life is worth less than that piece of tissue, and that's the point they want to make. Our lives mean nothing. Period. Nada. We are nothing but baby making machines, and we either make those babies or we are complete dispensable. That's why our healthcare is so very, very bad as we get older and our baby making days are behind us. They want us to die because at that point, there is no reason for us to exist any longer. We're no longer worth anything; we're just takers.
Gods, is there anything or anyone I could hate anymore than these self-righteous hypocrites foisting their religious ideas on everyone else. How can this happen in a country that has separation of church and state written directly into its constitution? Why is this never raised? How can they get around the religious aspect? Especially when other religions are suing them precisely FOR violating their own personally held religious beliefs?
Somedays, I wonder what all those marches, all the sit-ins, and screaming was for all those decades ago. Why did I do it or it to end up like this? AFAIC, every single woman of childbearing years should get her damned tubes tied and say to hell with the religious right's opinion. The Earth could use a rest from bearing anymore bodies upon it, and we damned sure don't need to feed anymore into the White Xtianist Nationalist adoption mill.

I cannot see something this draconian becoming law. At some point, these lunatics need to be brought back down to earth. This fever needs to be broken.

(23,852 posts)This isn't about life at all, they would kill us for the sin of getting pregnant and not raising their children - regardless of our age or ability to do so. The law they passed probably rules out birth control as well, but they are keeping that part secret until they start jailing women and doctors for preventing births by using birth control pllls.
