Gas prices here in Northern Illinois just in one day went from 3.26 to 3.67 per gallon. 40 cents at one time. Has gas ever gone down 40 cents at one time ? No it takes a month for the price to slowly drip down. It just infuriates me that they can continually get away with this. Again sorry but I am steaming..

(86,528 posts)A couple weeks after the rest of the country but went back up over $3.50/gal two weeks later. Lasted long enough for me to fill up both cars once. Premium has been at least $4/gal the whole time.

(111,242 posts)when there's a lot of competition for the winter formula gas and the summer formula gas isn't in full production yet. Then the opposite swap happens in September. You're right, the prices tend to drip down slowly, but they do drip down.
My strategy was to drive 4 cylinder cars (and one 4 cylinder pickup) and fill up at the end of Feb. Then I'd limit my driving and often didn't have to fill up again until almost May, when the prices were starting to go back down.
It's a pain in the ass but it's going to tend to happen every year. I figure it's the cost of cleaner air, a big deal when you live in a valley like I do.
