How the Secret Service Said Goodbye to Mitt Romney

How the Secret Service Said Goodbye to Mitt Romney

by The Troubadour

Marc Ambinder has a brief piece up at GQ entitled "How the Secret Service Said Goodbye to Mitt Romney." The piece begins with this delicious opening:

At some point, early Wednesday morning, when Gov. Mitt Romney and family were tucked into bed, a quiet call went out on the radio channel used by his Secret Service agents: "Javelin, Jockey details, all posts, discontinue."

Of all the indignities involved in losing a presidential race, none is more stark than the sudden emptiness of your entourage. The Secret Service detail guarding Governor Romney since Feb 1. stood down quickly. He had ridden in a 15-car motorcade to the Intercontinental Hotel in Boston for his concession speech. He rode in a single-car motorcade back across the Charles River to Belmont. His son, Tagg, did the driving.

I'm clearly a horrible person, for the image of Tagg driving – and Romney suddenly without his entourage – brings nothing but a smile to my face.

Indeed, he won many points with me by keeping Palin off the stage and trying to get his supporters in line.

Romney, on the other hand, was a lying fuckstick who encouraged every bad feeling his supporters were having, or smiled wanly at them. He never had the stones McCain had when McCain told that woman that her delusions about Obama weren't true.

Romney is a coward and a fraud, and a nasty piece of business to boot, so I'm firmly happy seeing him eating shit in a way that would have disturbed me for McCain, or Dole, or even Bush senior (Dubya was just a frat boy asshole).

Romney can suffer no "indignity," because he conducts himself without any dignity.

Greg: Mr. President, once again, we really wish you wouldn't do that. You put yourself at great risk, sir.

Matt Douglas: Oh, yeah, right. Let me ask you something. In all the years ex-presidents have had Secret Service protection, has there ever been even one assassination attempt on any of 'em?

Chet: Uh, no, sir.

Matt Douglas: I find that sad. The minute you're out of office they don't care enough about you to kill you anymore. People are FICKLE.

Romney has his family. When the race was close, agents would joke about the number of "j" words they'd need to come up with in order to give every one of his children, their wives, and all of their children code names. That's 29 people who would have received, if not protection, at least a protective survey and recommendations from the Service. Quietly, plans had already been put in place to assign protective details to all of them, just in case.

Nowhere, is there any smattering of schadenfreude.

  2. The commentary you interpret as schadenwhatever is most likely attributable to the KOSack who quoted the QC piece in his diary.

  3. So where are you getting off called Armbinder: "....evil, bad,... young and stupid"?

It was cool to read this article, because I had the same question: when do Rmoney and Lyin' lose their SS protection and how does this happen?

So it was good information for me.

And as for the schadenwhatever, it's a bit hard NOT to feel that way. Both Rmoney and Lyin' obviously had such disdain for the common man and woman. It is a bit good to see them get their cumuppance in such a public way.

Anyway, have a GREAT day!
