NYPD: Take off masks before entering stores
https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/face-masks-robbery-nypd-require-customers-remove-covid-19/
This is quite a turnaround. I’m shocked to see this as I never thought I would. Face masks, once an essential Covid-19 protective measure, are now being worn by criminals to conceal their identities, according to New York police who are urging businesses to unmask customers before letting them in stores. The recommendation is a 180-degree turn from mask-wearing norms at the onset of the pandemic. During peak periods of infection, federal agencies mandated mask-wearing in public places, while many businesses required customers to wear them on the premises. Now, however, some businesses are banning customers from entering the premises with face masks on, saying the policy change is needed to identify thieves. And after numerous incidents, the New York Police Department is urging business owners to make shoppers remove their face masks and flash their features before being let in.

2. Fuck that shit. I've managed to stay alive through this crap for three years,
despite 3 hospitalizations, and three other trips to the ER. If I get covid, with my comorbidities, I’m dead. If I’m out of the house, and out of the car, I’m wearing a KN95. It’s not a balaclava, or a ski mask, or fucking panty hose. It’s a protective mask.

4. Can they put their masks back on as soon as they're in the store?
If it's just a 10 second reveal, and customers can hold their breath, it will be safe. Like TSA making you drop your mask as you go through security.

6. This is what a fine jewelry store did even during the earlier days
You have to take the mask off for a few seconds as you enter so they can get the faces on camera and then they can put it back on.

11. I think you will find that is not true-public does not equal private but the opposite
You can try but at airports & banks & courts & DMV's etc they will need to see your face.

13. I assume it would be my choice: take off the mask so the store can take a photo, or ...
... leave, find another store.
It has nothing to do with showing my face in public. It's a private store. I can patronize or not. I agree with you: no explanation is necessary. ![]() I was in a fine jewelry store a few months ago. I got a new battery for my Timex watch. Easy transaction. I put on a mask before I approached the counter. |

19. Same At The Pot Store
The whole time CDC recommended masks it was that way.
. The first 6 months or so, it was curbside out back, and even in the car we had to pull the mask back. They still have curbside but I don't use it anymore. Since some chemotherapy patients go there, I still see patrons with masks, but they don't make them take it off anymore. |

12. Easy solve. Door camera. Take off mask briefly before entering.
Lots of the local pot shops had this rule during the height of the pandemic. An employee hung by the door and made certain everyone took off the mask for a sec so the camera could see them.
Minor inconvenience to those who want to mask and major headache to those who want to rob. |

14. Simply refuse to do business with any store that bans masks
With all the other options available it's a buyers market. Be sure to call the biz to complain and say bye bye.

17. 100% reasonable to combat rampant, defiant shoplifting.
At least they'll know who to exclude.
When shoplifting gangs organized after the BLM protests, they'd walk out of the downtown Target with TVs and out of Nordstrom with designer bags. It pissed off most law-abiding citizens that there were basically no consequences. I used to see Meth heads shambling out of the downtown Target with cases of beer or 12 packs of toilet paper to sell at 3rd and Pike. I don't see that much now. |

23. I live in a seniors community. A number of people wear masks constantly.
They wear them even when outdoors.
It's because they are scared to remove them -- scared to death. Some of these 70, 80, and 90 year olds will die at their next illness whatever it is. As discussed above, the idea of removing the mask momentarily when entering certain stores for the purpose of being photographed seems reasonable. |

25. I would never shop in a store that asked me to remove my mask. To be effective, masks have to be
worn constantly if indoors or crowded outdoor areas, especially if others are unmasked.
It takes me a while to get the seal just right over my nose and face with my 3M N95 Aura mask. I'm not going to have to do that over and over again and contaminate the mask. It seems like the NYPD wants to force infect people. They are psychopaths to even suggest such a thing. Ironically, when a shoplifting event occurs in my town and they put videos up on the news, the robbers are almost never wearing masks. I remember 2 people robbed a liquor store down the street from my house, during the mask mandate, and these two fools weren't even wearing masks. |

28. We have a local store that has a reasonable solution
Even during the height of the pandemic, they had a big sign at the entrance asking customers to lower their masks as soon as they open the front door so a security camera could record their face. Anybody who didn't do that could still enter the store but they were watched more closely.
