Obama wins re-election with Fla. too close to call

By TAMARA LUSH
Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Yet again, Florida hangs in the balance. Only this time, it doesn't matter.

President Barack Obama held onto a slim lead in Florida early Wednesday, but he didn't need the largest swing state to win re-election. Instead, he captured several other battleground states.

In Florida, the race was too close to call as 200,000 votes had yet to be counted, and Obama's lead was much less than that - about 50,000 ballots.

Long lines at the polls and last-minute absentee ballots prevented votes from being counted in some places. Miami-Dade elections officials said 18,000 uncounted absentee votes would be tallied Wednesday; Pinellas officials said they had 9,000.

1. The Florida Republicans planned this mess and they should pay the political price.

They had 11(?) proposed amendments to the state constitution on the ballot, reduced early voting, tried to purge thousands of legitimate voters. They rolled out their entire ball of dirty tricks in an attempt to steal another election.

If I were a Florida resident, I know I would be VERY motivated to vote Governor Rick Scott and his buddies in the legislature out of office in protest of their anti-democracy actions to suppress the vote.

But given the make up of Florida, the Legislature will stay red.

A Floridian here.

As bad as this particular one is, it might not even make the top 10.

That means those people had been waiting in line for at least four hours after the polls closed to do their civic duty. By law, if you're in line when the polls close, you will get to vote.

The last voter left one polling place just after 1 o'clock Wednesday morning.

Now if you were a go getting journalist wouldn't you want to talk to that individual. In fact you could do a really good human interest story with teeth. Later you could expand it into an entire documentary.

This individual would have had to have gotten into line by 7 p.m. (6 hours earlier). Who do you think he voted for even knowing the national race had been called an hour before?
