Fantastic job President Biden, welcome home Brittany.

(46,682 posts)option to pick and chose who gets released. Russia has its own process.
I am thrilled that it was a one for one exchange, and not a 2 for 1 in favor of Russia.

If Trump couldn't get Putie to release Whelan during the two years he was still in office, as besties...

(1,297 posts)That they have to expend so much energy on these things, both in finding them and working up and trumpeting to their choir just how outrageous they are. Benghazi, Benghazi!
It's a lot easier for us. The criminality, atrocities, and traitorous acts more or less twitter themselves.

(32,579 posts)Britney was ALWAYS going to be released by the Russians in a prisoner swap. That's why they grabbed her in the first place, to swap her for a high-up Russian prisoner. She had an awful terrible, no-good year but they were never planning to keep her locked up for 12 years or whatever the sentence was.
Many of us were predicting that she'd be out before the end of this year ... and that's exactly what happened.
Welcome back Britney!

(18,969 posts)She was a political prisoner, that was clear. She is a high profile prisoner and was given a ridiculous sentence to make her a valuable swap target. If she had been given 2 years like that school teacher who is in jail in Russia for smuggling a little over a half ounce of weed into their country, she probably would be serving her full term. But being given 10+ years made it clear she had to be released.
Paul Whelan is a little more complicated, he's been convicted of espionage even though the US thinks that's BS he did have some red flags.
And The man who was swapped for Griner has been in jail or prison since March of 2008, he did almost 15 years, he was not sentenced to life, but 25 years, basically he got early parole, but served a ton of his sentence.

Enjoy the accomplishment of our Dem admin in getting Britney Griner out, and relax with the cynicism for a second, please.
Bless your heart.

(102,119 posts)screaming at Biden, "What would YOU say to the Whelen family...." on and on and on. Biden, having just fully explained why it is that he could not get both released and the choice was Griner or nothing, and what he DID say to the Whelen family-- well that woman screaming what had already been fully detailed just pissed me off. It sounded a lot like Kristen Welcher of NBC/MSNBC- who can be really really petulant. Did anyone hear that? I just wanted to throttle her, whoever it was.

(38,414 posts)Of course, I am not opposed to this. Just explaining why the Russians acted as they did.
And I am not degrading her release. NO, THAT IS NOT THE POINT I WAS TRYING TO MAKE!
The Russians wanted to get their guy back...that is the point.
..............And this was the .."only way". .it could be done:.keep someone from the U.S.A., well known & innocent
..........Then trade the ...Well known innocent one for the ..."spy" ..............got that ?...
..............ALSO, THE RUSSIANS KNEW THAT PLOY WOULD WORK.........GOT THAT?...THAT IS MY POINT!!

(21,256 posts)what should President Biden have done? Hold out for Whelan? Just say no to any swap involving the arms dealer? What is your opinion?
My opinion is, good job President Biden bringing back an American citizen who was being unjustly imprisoned in Russia.

Thank you for posting this.

(21,256 posts)the right wing narrative that is being pushed by the MSM is that this was a bad deal. Members of DU are free to agree with that opinion but nevertheless it is the Magat narrative.

(21,256 posts)that is why I only watch Nicolle Wallace. I did see some headlines on my search engine that state that Brittney was arrested for bringing drugs into Russia. She had a prescription for the drug, but the MSM leaves that detail out.
