(Scary!) Coverup after fatal hit and run was most extensive police had ever seen.

Reading this news story just chilled me to the core.

In a nutshell, a woman and co-worker were driving drunk in Portland, Oregon after a basketball game when they accidentally struck and killed an elderly woman. Instead of stopping, they drove off. But it didn't stop there- not by a long shot. The driver successfully enlisted the aid of friends and family, hatching an extensive scheme to cover up the killing...

One which almost worked.

All in all, five other people were sentenced to jail today for helping her in the scheme, which (among other things) involved flying as far away as San Diego in order to pick up parts to repair the damage to the car that killed the pedestrian.

A guilty conscience and the tiniest bit of DNA evidence on the car were the only things which stood in the way of 'success'.

Truly scary.

I mean, you think of this sort of thing in regards to Mob killings, usually. Really fucked up. I think what gets me the most is how close she and her co-conspirators came to getting away with it.
