(8,694 posts)the "shoeshine" pic, which as we now know was really just a security check, still it looks like rich dude getting a shoe shine in front of his private jet.
I never did figure out what was so bad about Kerry's windsurfing.

(59,502 posts)Seriously, Bush was gathering brush every vacation, then coming out bruised - either from that or falling off his mountain bike.
If the media would have liked Kerry, the half day wind surfing during the Republican convention would have been seen as good, clean, fun, on a beautiful Nantucket day, with Teresa and reporters - all smiling - on the boat and an athletic, healthy looking candidate getting some exercise. ( It likely did help him avoid a whisper campaign that he was unhealthy - he was treated for cancer a year and a half before and was still thinner than he was before or after 2004) He spent the rest of the day practicing for the first debate.
It is amazing that a country that worships athletics made fun of this and made it seem elitist and non-athletic. In fact, it is less expensive than Bush's country club golf was.

(8,694 posts)I thought it was a photo of a healthy guy enjoying the water, much more machismo than someone golfing. Yet, it became some kind of "bad" image.
you didn't buy that shit about brush clearing and falling off bikes, did you? They were drunk bruises. He stopped being a dry drunk halfway through his two stolen Presidencies.

(59,502 posts)Seriously, assume that Bush's story were true. Without the media telling people what was good and what was bad, which really looks better? As to be elitist, the only way that windsurfing is elitist is most of us would not even think of trying, because it looks really hard (at least on a beach where I saw lots of twenty somethings trying in the distance.)

people give poppy a pass on being a terrible campaigner because he won (once, anyway); it sticks for dukakis because of the result.
the fact of the matter is that the republican party was doing well at that point and keeping them on was the very likely result regardless of the actual candidates. we could have run a tremendously charismatic candidate and likely still would have lost.

Josh Romney and the luxury Winnebago he used to visit 99 counties in Iowa "serving his country". Maybe the punkass should drive over to Arlington Section 60.

(89,247 posts)video. the whole event is a disaster. he even says "bling" in the video. and at one point there is some kid he is looking at and a girl says "that's michael" and romney responds "yeah michael jordan". immediately bring up some famous black star rather than just see a kid whose name happens to be michael ? like it's some unsusual name or something.
there is also the 10k bet, i can't hire illegals because i'm running for pres, i like to fire people, etc.
the guy just sucks overall.

(441 posts)It's not just that one line. The whole video clip is incredibly awkward in the "if I touch you too much I'll get cooties" sense.
Get ready for a nasty campaign by the Democrats. It's not that we shouldn't be burning Romney on policy issues, that's easy enough, but his persona is so out of touch and awkward, almost alien. If we've got good political strategists working for us (a big "if" , they're gonna maul him over these things.

(27,985 posts)Of course, I'm pretty amazed that this bunch of loons is tearing each other up for the unique position of losing to Obama. Because whoever is the nominee, and I will be shocked if it isn't Willard, the magic Mittster, he's gonna lose to Obama. Even if they had a credible candidate in the mix, which they don't, nobody is going to beat Obama.

(24,411 posts)Romney really is an empty suit.
There are two types of CEOs--incredibly brilliant people like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates.
Then you've got the charismatic, suck-up weasels who just look the part. Even though
they are terrific speakers and have some leadership skills--they are basically figureheads
who look like CEOs and are really good at clinking glasses with the cocktail circuit.
The latter is Romney. He seems to look the part and he's affable--but he doesn't seem like
the sharpest tool in the shed. You look at him and you just know that if his father wasn't
in politics--Mitt would probably be a local anchorman in Scranton.
Given that--I think there will be plenty of "tank" moments. Romney is a decent campaigner
when he's working with a memorized speech. However, he's not very good at just being
himself. His facial expressions seem forced and goofy. He seems kinda goofy and he doesn't
always say the right things.
There will be many bad moments for Romney in the upcoming Presidential campaign.

(25,183 posts)Whether or not a single anti-Romney emerges or not, Mittens is still going to need to suck up to both the tea partiers and the fundies. Perhaps he will do some typically Mormon thing in a fundie church, unaware that it has nothing to do with their particular religious fetishes.
Anyone as firmly a member of the 0.0001% as he is, is bound to foul up while trying to demonstrate the common touch.

(23,272 posts)the draft himself would make the start of a great montage of Romney's privilege over the years, and his callous disregard for others.
It's all the same attitude and could be very effective in spotlighting just what a dick he is ("I like to fire people", "I'm unemployed too!" etc. etc)

(14,128 posts)without disrespecting Senator Kerry like some here may want him to do because of past primary grudges (04, 08).
This is going to be another grueling election and Obama is going to need everyone's help.
Thankfully, he appreciates and respects that hardwork.
