Currently, Florida under Ron DeSantis is not a functioning democracy. We will find out this November if this is only a temporary crisis — or a now permanent one.👇🏼

When Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Thursday that he would be removing Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren, a twice-elected Democrat, DeSantis said he hadn’t had a conversation with Warren about it.

But standing on the stage with DeSantis, ready to thank the governor and give comment, was Warren’s appointed replacement — Hillsborough County Judge Susan Lopez, who was appointed to the bench by DeSantis in 2021. With Warren’s removal, Lopez will immediately begin as the state attorney.

”I have the utmost respect for our state laws, and I understand the important role that the state attorney plays in ensuring the safety of our community and the enforcement of our laws,” Lopez said in a statement. “I want to thank the governor for placing his trust in me, and I promise that I will faithfully execute the duties of this office.”

I don't think people realize how bad this is. Elections no longer matter in Florida. Expect other red extremist states to follow.

posing like his hero - facial expression and posture. So when does the yellow hair dye kick in? And let's not forget the pancake makeup in an obnoxious orange shade. My state is in shambles.

Removed for no apparent reason. If he had been appointed by desatan then it would be a completely different situation.

Desatan has basically said he can replace any official in Florida that does not agree with him.

He is a clear and present danger to this country.

Mini dictator gets re-elected. Say hello to open carry, more restrictive abortion the list is long. Anyone who doesn’t do what he wants will be removed.
Too many voters here live here part time but registered in Florida to vote and they really don’t pay attention.
He has been very quiet lately about abortion and open carry.

Something huge happened today. DeSantis announced he was suspending Tampa’s Dem prosecutor who opposes criminalizing abortion and trans youth, & replaced him with a conservative. (This is a county DeSantis lost, by the way.)

A stunning overthrow.

“He’s not only stripping away our personal liberties, but he is removing those who have the guts to stand up to him,” responded a Democratic lawmaker.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis took the extraordinary step on Thursday of suspending the locally elected prosecutor of Hillsborough County, home to Tampa. Andrew Warren, the suspended prosecutor, promptly denounced the move as an “illegal overreach.”

The suspension of this Democratic official, announced by the Republican governor at a news conference where he was flanked by Hillsborough County’s Republican sheriff and other local officials, is the latest chapter in the GOP’s sustained attacks on reproductive rights and transgender rights in Florida, as well as broader criminal justice reform efforts.

DeSantis based the suspension on Warren’s statements that his office would not prosecute abortion-related cases and cases involving anti-transgender laws. DeSantis also mentioned Warren’s policies establishing a presumption against prosecuting certain behaviors.

DeSantis claimed that with those statements and policies Warren “neglected” his duties and “display[ed] a lack of competence” to carry out his duties.

DeSantis replaced Warren with Susan Lopez, a local judge who is a member of the conservative legal organization the Federalist Society. His decision effectively kicked the Democratic Party out of an office it won in both 2016 and 2020, in a county that DeSantis himself lost by nine percentage points in 2018.

that a governor has the legal right to throw out a duly elected representative of the people and replace him/her with a person he chooses. This completely nullifies elections!

Edit to say, I'd be raising holy hell if I lived down there!

In Washington state where I'm from if there was a problem with a locally elected attorney the state attorney generally could take legal action. The final decision would be handled by the courts.

No governor or state attorney general could unilaterally fire an elected official.
