As the countdown continues, polling for the Governor and Senate races in Pennsylvania are turning decisively toward our Democratic candidates. These upticks are despite the headwinds every pundit and political journalist have harped on: economic factors, low approval numbers for President Biden and historical precedent. We still have 100+ days to go until Election Day but running fringe and/or carpetbaggers for office has it's downside.
According to Fox polling:
Shapiro is 10 pts up over Mastriano clocking in at 50-40%
Fetterman is 11 pts up over OZ pulling 47-36%
Still early but the winds have shifted.
Btw, just read that Mastriano is ditching his buddy from Gab. Appears the antisemitic, overall fascist lean isn't playing well among PA's electorate.

(49,246 posts)PA does not usually have volatility. A trend is a trend and stays that way my friend.
I would not translate these results to other states. GQP are running fascist carpetbaggers here. They are exceptionally bad candidates. Fetterman is a statewide office holder and popular. Shapiro is running a smart, bold almost New Deal type platform. The question might be why they're not up 15 points.

(11,696 posts)Once we shift into 'After Labor Day' mode, we'll all have a better sense of where the campaigns are truly headed. I'm expecting a much tighter race.
Btw, I share your take on--why aren't they up 15 points? Oz is bad enough, a rank opportunist who has flip-flopped on every issue. I'm sure he thought he would glide to victory by leaning into his celebrity status and hanging onto his buddy Trump's diminishing coattails.
Mastriano, however, is a true horror, an avowed White Christian Nationalist and all around bigot. His plans for Pennsylvania are nightmarish. I said on another site that I'm not sure what is worse: Mastriano, the man, or the voters who support a full-blown fascist.
Both these men must be defeated.

(11,696 posts)We moved back to PA in late August, 2021.
I was in utter disbelief that a creature like Mastriano won his primary. Which is a reminder that there are no safe havens from the fringe of the ugly fringe contingent.
We fight them here. We fight them everywhere.

(36,890 posts)But we Dems still need to get out the vote no matter what. We need to show big numbers in the midterms.
This is for Joe Biden to have a successful showing, he needs the House and Senate passing his programs before 2024. It's only going to happen when we elect our candidates to Congress.
Pennsylvania will do its part, I promise!

(11,696 posts)Oz is running 'soft on crime' ads against Fetterman and calling him an avowed socialist holding hands with Bernie Sanders.

(71,077 posts)Fetterman beat a sitting Lieutenant Governor in a primary and then ran with Wolf in one of the most successful campaigns in PA history. He was a great Lieutenant Governor too...you should watch some of the clips.
peggysue2
(11,696 posts)But there's no doubt that Oz and his campaign will start throwing anything/everything at the wall to see what sticks. Oz tried the 'everyman' schtick; that was both lame and laughable.
It's going to get ugly. Do I think Fetterman is ready for it?
Yes, indeed.
Demsrule86
(71,077 posts)the General...they won easily. I saw the pic of Fetterman dressed like Sanders but...Oz is a dual citizen...who voted in Turkey...all politics aside, he should not even be allowed to run for the Senate in my opinion. Also, Oz doesn't live in PA and consider what happened to Santorum when it was discovered he didn't live in PA...and used the money from PA to homeschool his kids...and he was a sitting Senator. So I think the fact that Fetterman is who he says he is will blunt the usual GOP bullshit.

(11,696 posts)Rick Scott let the cat out of the bag when he announced his Nightmare for America. And put the plan in writing, no less. Little wonder why McConnell refused to offer an agenda 'until Republicans held the majority.'
If current surveys are correct, the 65+ voters are getting the message; the GOP is losing ground with seniors.
Who would have thunk it? Promise to take away Pop and Nana's SS and healthcare and you're likely to get a reaction. Only not in a good way.
So yes, pound, pound, pound away!

(47,763 posts)Joe Biden isn't on the ballot. And, please, let's keep our focus on 2022, as this thread does.
We just got making chips here. We may soon have a $2000 cap on prescription drugs. The cost of gas is coming down. Unemployment is low.
They, on the other hand, have no run on forcing a 10-year-old to bear a child and denying veterans health care.
We can keep all our Senate seats and win two of theirs. Maybe more. If we keep the House we can do great things. Everyone, do your utmost to win in November.
peggysue2
(11,696 posts)Laser focus on November is the first, crucial step. Everything else is noise at the moment.
We pull off a win in November (and PA is one of the keys to enlarging our majority), then we'll have the momentum and votes to make things happen that actually benefit Americans and ensure a democratic (small 'd') future.
Otherwise? Nightmares really can come true.

(113,330 posts)Then it must be really bad for Republicans all over?
PA is a Trump state. One of the most Trumpist in the union, from what I have read.
If these polls are true, or even close to true, it could spell good fortune in a few other "Trumpist" states.
Republicans should be concerned.

(5,872 posts)PA is purple, with a contrary quirky electorate.
Mastriano is a poor candidate for two interlocking reasons. He's too nuts for the Independents that swing the state, and even too nuts for the states old-school republican donors. So despite Shapiro being a bit boring, Mastriano faces an uphill battle and a major funding disadvantage. Shapiro though is well established and is quite capable of running a well oiled campaign.
Oz is just a bad fit for PA. His kooky alternative medicine baggage hurts him with independents, while being Turkish and Muslim hurts him with the hard right. Plus the NJ factor and just generally being unlikeable. Fetterman has the right grit for PA voters.

(5,872 posts)In my experience living here, there are few actual fascist types or even true racists.
What I do see are cultural conservatives. If you talk like them, like the same sports teams as them, drink beer and eat burgers, and go to the same church as them - they won't care if you're black, brown, or even purple. Have different values, and they'll hate you for it and think you're trying to destroy them - even if you're white too.

(11,696 posts)As for Mastriano? He is a freaking fascist, a Mussolini-in-waiting. Still can't believe the man won the primary.
Read an article today in the Philadelphia Inquirer about Mastriano claiming Josh Shapiro and other Democrats are threatening the lives of people like him, purposely inciting violence against those who hold different political and/or religious beliefs. He referenced Lee Zeldin, the guy scratched with a keychain. According to Mastriano that was a genuine assassination attempt.
These so-called strong men are certainly babies yowling constantly over how persecuted they are.
