Tourist Falls Into Mount Vesuvius Crater While Taking Selfie On Forbidden Route

Stupid Americans. Must be a Trumper

According to Italian media, the 23-year-old and his family, who were visiting from the USA, ignored signage after bypassing a visitor turnstile and walked along an out-of-bounds path on Saturday (9 July).

The man then attempted to take a selfie at the summit of the volcano - which overlooks the city of Naples - and dropped his phone, before falling as he attempted to retrieve it.

He dropped several metres and a rescue helicopter, police and Vesuvius guides had to be called out, with the latter abseiling down to lift him out.

He subsequently had to be treated for cuts and bruises to his arms and back.

The tourist - as well as the three family members accompanying him - now face criminal charges.

1. Maybe I'm wrong but I doubt a tRumper would be inquisitive enough to climb Mt Vesuvius.

3. It is the stupidity that makes me think that.

And the arrogance to break the rules and go on a trail that you aren't supposed to go on

2. Glad they are okay, and the criminal penalties seem appropriate.

11. Not unless they died

or lost the ability to procreate. The Darwin Award is a posthumous “thank you” to people who, through their own evident stupidity, have lost the ability to pass this stupidity on to future progeny.

6. It's the time of the year for tourists to start falling off the Blue Ridge Parkway

and waterfalls in NC.

Waterfalls get a few every year- and almost without fail- (there are exceptions) people climb OVER fences with the warning signs attached to them.

It's shocking really-

10. Anytime you have a 'tourist spot', you're going to have dumb tourists. There an old bridge crossing

the Niangua River in MO (south of the Ozarks) on highway 64 (about 20 miles from Lebanon MO), and some tourists from the stories I've heard, would climb up to the bridge decking, and then jump off (about a 20-30 foot fall).

A serious problem on doing this was the water level was very shallow at this point, and we had people who break their backs, their legs, etc. when they did this. I never thought that our volunteer fire department would have to deal w/ such issues, but they did.

13. oh, I know those bridges in MO. I was a paramedic for Cox (was based in Christian Co.)

but I traveled to other counties as needed.

I hauled people out of shit like that all the time.

That was about a thousand years ago

15. Wow, what a small world! The only reason I know that bridge in particular was that (1) my

grandmother and great-grandmother lived just up the street from the bridge (above Sand Springs) and (2) my great Uncle was one of the architects on that bridge many moons ago.

It's a neat bridge but who would have thought people would jump off? There used to be a old country store right there at the very entrance to Bennett Springs state park and the bridge crossing over the river. That is, until a vehicle losing control slammed into the building and demolished it. A dangerous intersection indeed.

16. MO's a pretty state- but, I hated the weather except for 3 weeks in October

Remember the ice storm of '91? I try to describe it to people at home--- I have never seen anything like that, and do not intend to ever again. No one believes me about how bad it was. On the ambulance we were wearing golf shoes just to get across people's yards. For weeks. For fucking weeks. It melted, and I moved home to NC asap.

18. Really, I do remember that. First time I had ever seen six inches of ice fall. The roads

everywhere were a mess and it took us forever to dig out.

9. From the article

snip-"The deaths stemmed from 137 separate incidents and the average age of those who died was around 23 - a stat reaffirmed by the latest incident at Mountain Vesuvius.

Almost three quarters of the deaths were men, with transport, drowning and falls among the most common causes of death."

12. Another brilliant tourist!

Ignore signs and warnings and any sort of advice. Because you know better and warnings are for sissies.

Good Lord!

20. Lame.

I was up there in May. It’s a wide path along the rim with a fence. And the volcano is a giant bowl with lava gravel. It’s a bitch to climb, one step forward, two steps back. Dude was an idiot, as there is no shortage of safe places to take selfies.
