'Doomsday' Submarine Armed With Nuclear Torpedoes Delivers to Russian Navy

‘Doomsday’ Submarine Armed With Nuclear Torpedoes Delivers to Russian Navy

A Russian Navy submarine armed with a strategic nuclear torpedo the size of a school bus was delivered to the Kremlin this week, according to an announcement from the shipyard.

Project 09852 Belgorod is based on a Russian Oscar-class guided-cruise missile submarine that has been altered to accommodate six 80-foot Poseidon nuclear torpedoes that could be armed with a warhead of up to 100 megatons, USNI News previously reported.

The submarine was delivered to the Russian Navy in a ceremony in at the Northern Fleet’s headquarters in Severodvinsk on Friday,

“The Belgorod submarine opens up new opportunities for Russia in conducting various research, allows conducting diverse scientific expeditions and rescue operations in the most remote areas of the world ocean,” according to a statement from Russian Navy chief Adm. Nikolai Anatolyevich Yevmenov.
“The ship is designed to solve diverse scientific problems, conduct search and rescue operations, and can also be used as a carrier of rescue deep-sea and autonomous unmanned underwater vehicles.”

13. Skip Tyler: "When I was twelve, I helped my daddy build a bomb shelter in our basement...

...because some fool parked a dozen warheads 90 miles off the coast of Florida. Well, this thing could park a coupla hundred warheads off Washington and New York and no one would know anything about it till it was all over."

5. That crew is doomed.

That sub will be in several sets of NATO crosshairs every second of every day as long as it exists.

6. The fact is we have

a fleet of nuclear submarines capable of hiding under the polar ice cap for extended periods of time. After a total exchange of ground to ground and airborne missiles, after the dust clears these submarines can emerge and wipe out whatever is left of Russia, and they know it. They don't want to start this chain of events anymore than we do.

7. Why "delivers to" instead of "delivered to"?

Just bad proofreading?

8. One word. "Kursk"...

The Russian navy is fucked up like a football bat.
The recent embarrassments in Ukraine are only the most recent examples.

11. Interesting torpedo

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Status-6_Oceanic_Multipurpose_System

The Poseidon appears to be a torpedo-shaped robotic mini-submarine which can travel at speeds of 185 km/h (100 kn). More recent information suggests a top speed of 100 km/h (54 kn), with a range of 10,000 km (5,400 nmi; 6,200 mi) and a depth maximum of 1,000 m (3,300 ft).

Typical depth of the drone may be about 50–100 meters for increased stealth features in low-speed stealth mode. Low depth in stealth mode is preferred because sound waves move to ocean floor and reduce radius of detection. Submarines use the same strategy in silent running mode.

It is 1.6–2 meters in diameter and 24 meters long. The warhead shown in the leaked figure is a cylinder 1.5 meters in diameter by 4 meters in length, giving a volume of 7 cubic meters. Comparing this to the volumes of other large thermonuclear bombs, the 1961 Soviet-era Tsar Bomba itself measured 8 meters long by 2.1 meters in diameter, indicating that the yield is at least several tens of megatons, generally consistent with early reports of 100 megatons. Some reports suggest the yield of the Poseidon's warhead is as low as 2 Mt.

12. Given the underwhelming performance of their other recent wonderweapons, I ain't worried

Their vaunted 'Terminator' tanks were deployed to Ukraine, and made zero impact while blowing up just fine.
