Merely voting Democratic in November will not stop the MAGA fascists from taking complete control of our nation and our lives. We need to contribute as much money as we can, volunteer to stuff envelopes, canvass, phone bank or whatever and get as many friends, relatives and co-workers to the polls to ALSO vote Democratic.
And, we need to be willing to be "street meat"---warm bodies willing to march, sit in, block highways and, in general, raise holy hell with the cruel greedy graspers determined to usher in an era of autocratic rule. The place to make "good trouble" is "in their face .
Some of us will get arrested. Some will get hurt. Some will not be welcome at the family table next Thanksgiving.
What is worth all that?
If we don't win this next election, we will likely never win another. There may not even BE another election.
In Timothy Snyder's "On Tyranny" he tells us that the Germans who voted in 1932, the Czechs and Slovaks who voted in 1946 and the Russians who voted in 1990 did not realize there would not be another meaningful fair election for them. "Any election can be the last, or at least the last in the lifetime of the person casting the vote."
Don't let this next election be our last. Remember "Fired up and ready to go!" ?
We need that again---on steroids!

(81,220 posts)For the first time, I think Im actually starting to be fearful.
But fear can be a great motivator. So Im gonna focus on making use of it.
Hey, whatever works. Sure beats sitting in silence and feeling depressed. I refuse to believe there isnt SOMETHING that can be done.

(2,735 posts)Did that during the Howard Dean candidacy. Invited a bunch of my friends to my house to learn about the candidate, and asked them to vote for him in the primary. Several did.
That's even more effective than door-knocking because you are usually talking to friends and friends of friends, and already have a relationship.

(70,089 posts)in fact, hoping to have a fundraiser for kelly westund at my farm in the fall.
nobody there will be able to vote for her, but they can give, and hopefully we work up a road trip.

(2,735 posts)for your candidate.
Sometimes a candidate will have time to appear by video or on the phone if they can't spare the time to come in person. (If a larger event within the district conflicts, the candidate will need to be there.)
Or there may be one or more videos you can share.
Your personal words on her behalf will make a big difference.

(10 posts)to be on TV more often rallying Democrats. We need to get mad. Instead of saying "It's a sad day for abortion rights" they should be saying "We're not going to put up with this!". the right uses anger whipped up by lies. stirring up people with the truth is not the same thing. And we need it badly.

The thing that pisses me off is that during the course of the year, when I call reps/Senators about an issue since Im not in their district or state, they dont want to hear from me. Aaarrrgghh!!!!

(15,124 posts)candidates. Some can drop hundreds without a problem while for others, $10 every now and then is a sacrifice.
No one needs to be embarrassed because they can't afford to "keep up" with others.
If we can, we contribute to the candidates or groups we think need it.
No one needs to know how much.

There's got to be a better way. It's off-putting AND depressing.

(6,120 posts)The context is that the feeling 'embarrassment' will be 'quaint' compared to the feeling of living under a Christian-Fascist regime.
Come on man, I know that you are smarter than that, most of your posts here are brilliant.
Your OP was intended to motivate people, as were mine, that is 'give money'. Thoughts and prayers aren't going to win it.
I'm trying to motivate a room where I read a lot of 'thoughts and prayers' with no specific support for Dem elections by simply explaining what I've done.
In 2020, I gave $480.00 to the Biden / Harris campaign, not TFG's. I don't feel even slightly embarrassed to state that fact, either.
We've all heard the various sayings about walking, talking, et c.
I'd say this 'horse' is deceased.

(54,368 posts)Without the knowledge or consent, but it is apparently considered a legitimate tactic, since Democrats are at a financial disadvantage in general.
I get literally hundreds of direct mail solicitations a month, and my office phone in Dallas, which everyone who knows me knows I only listen to about 3 times a year, has a backlog of hours of messages from local politicians from all over the country asking for money. The ones I find particularly offensive are so-called "surveys" which ask stupidly obvious questions, but always end with the real purpose of the "survey," namely a request for money.
How much any given person contributes is less important than how many of us contribute. Two million people contributing $5 is more important than one person contributing $2 million. But thanks for contributing. Two people on your list are people I know, and they both have formidable opposition, one to the point that his fellow Democrats fell for a Republican scam that brought him down, and cowardly still refuse to apologize.

There are way more who share liberal progressive values than there are MAGAs. Add in commitment to stop them.
