The end of the United States

"Conservatives" have broken our form of government and IMO it is unrepairable. First they broke the Presidency then the senate and now the Supreme court. Each branch of government is now beyond repair.

We will cease to be ever be unified again. We are now 50 individual countries and we are back to the "Articles of Confederation. Conservatives are on the side of the slaveholders as they are using the same philosophy that allowed slavery to now be imposed on women.

I am sad for my kids.

Unless everyone gives in to the assault.

A multiethnic republic about to come apart.

26. You're probably right

I've just read more about the Third Reich since my mom gave me Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl when I was 13. I've always wondered how the Nazis got so much support to do such horrific things to other people. It's not such a mystery anymore. Very sad. I'll do some reading on Yugoslavia.

8. No, the conflict between bigots/sexists/racists and equality/diversity has been with us always

The social hierarchy authoritarians are having a surge at the moment. But this is nothing new.

In fact, then being in some degree of control has been more the rule than the exception. Consider institutional slavery, denying women the vote, Jim Crow and the kkk, etc.

The improvement from the 1960s to Obama twice elected president is the anomaly in the scheme of things. We were long overdue for a major backlash and here it is.

But progress has always prevailed, even if it is slow.

I very much hope that overturning roe and the right to privacy galvanized democrats and wakes up the otherwise apolitical. This may be their Gettysburg.

9. The same thing was said in the 70's.

Iím guessing the same thing was said at the Civil War.

For me the fight isnít over until itís over. It will never be over.

11. It was not that bad in the seventies

Not even close. Yes the last time we were like this ended in a Civil War.

12. The Sixties in the US was chaos

Massive race riots, cities on fire, a war that killed 10s of thousands of Americans and the era of political murders beginning with JFK then MLK, RFK.

We survived that and we will survive this regardless of what the croaker trolls think.

13. The sixties were chaos

but we did not break the institutions. As a matter of f act it was just the opposite in most cases. We did not braek the presidency, Supreme court and the Senate.

14. I was gassed. College students were killed

Young men conscripted for an illegal war. Racism rampant. George Wallace was a Democrat.

I guess I remember it differently. Of course there was no internet then to document every atrocity.

16. I was there and gassed also

We did not have an assault on our institutions. That is what makes this different.

officially discriminated against black people in those times. Things werenít so great in the past.

24. Institutions might have discriminated

But that is totally different than the actual institution being under attack. Here is the difference. The institutions are being destroyed from within. McConnell breaks the Senate, Trump breaks the presidency by refusing to exit and The Supreme court decides to disregard precedence.

29. And that horrific Civil War was not the end of the United States.

I grow weary of so many people here on DU announcing the death of democracy and the end of the US.
Have you given up already? Be strong, we'll get through this.

15. Wait until you are defeated to be defeated.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is our birthright. We have to defend and fight for our birthright.

There is nothing new here.

We fought yesterday, we fight today, we will fight tomorrow. Sometimes we do get to rest and savor victory but the next challenge has always been on the horizon or just beyond.

We are forever warriors for ourselves.

18. We are in bad shape. Think about it. The American Taliban 6 on SCOTUS...

are in place and are now governing how we live. More guns and more white babies are the priority. Dobbs v Jackson is just the beginning as Uncle Clarence Thomas signaled after Roe fell.

We're stuck with the ridiculously undemocratic filibuster and equally undemocratic Electoral College, both vestiges of a system set up to prop up a minority, slave-holding states.

And the system continues and is now propping up red states.

The Taliban 6 may have overreached though as women voters are pissed at the fact that these 6 people, despite polls showing 70 percent of Americans favor abortion as a legal choice, have decided in their arrogance that half the population, the 170 million women (give of take) no longer have autonomy over their bodies.

This won't end well. The backlash will have a tremendous effect on the politics and stability of the nation.
