Chris Christie is Sending Us a Message.

If Chris Christie thought there was any chance in hell of Mitt winning the election, he would not have stated on Fox and Friends how little he cared about Romney's desire to get some political hay out of visiting the devastated New Jersey Shore. He was angrily dismissive of Steve Doucy's suggestion.
Christie would be hedging his bets a lot more if he thought Romney could win. The damage done by Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey will take years to rectify. Any hope of restoring the shore and protecting Northern Jersey from floods will require untold billions in Federal aid. Thousands of New Jersey citizens have lost there homes, and in many cases all their belongings. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Jersey businesses have been shut down and many will not be able to re-open for months.
So if Chris Christie thought there was any chance in hell of a Romney victory, he would be sucking up to the next President of the United States, even while he courted favor with the current occupant of the White House. This is very telling especially if you consider that, as a leading Romney surrogate, Christie would be aware of the internal polling coming out of Boston.
Please don't use this as an excuse to not GOTV. We still need all hands on deck, especially if we want to keep control of the Senate and seize controll of the House.

Was it the VP spot?

(12,296 posts)Most on the right tolerate him because he's at the top of their ticket. But as a human being, I think he's got a very short list of "friends".

As for Christie, when your ass is headed for the mower blades you take any help you can get. I am sure that the President finds this ironic and amusing on some level.

(8,954 posts)At this point with Obama looking to be the likely winner, why suck up to Romney when it would make more sense to foster a working relationship with someone who is in a better position to assist with the rebuilding of your state?
Christie's first responsibility is to his constituency, and at this point he's looking ahead and not dwelling on partisan loyalties that might tend to placate the Tea Party element but do very little to help the people of New Jersey.

(7,515 posts)he knew even then that Romney's chances were not good and VP candidates on losing tickets do not go on to become president...In fact only FDR went from being VP on a losing ticket to the WH.

That, and while I cannot cannot stand the man's style and politics, I'm sure he has some genuine care for the citizens of his state and picking fights with the President would not help him in that respect. Don't forget the guy has to run for re-election as governor too.

(296 posts)the same dumb photo op shit. Romney probably got on the horn with a whole schedule of where they could go, and Christie went ape shit. After being up all night in Armageddon, he needed to vent and Douchie was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

(14,656 posts)of his bread is buttered. He got a win-win for himself and it helped us too!

(14,040 posts)at his best he's a nauseating blowhard but I think he love's his state and his state was just devastated. I think that effects people. If we're going to hypothesize my guess is Romney's people contacted him and instead of asking how his state was, they went straight to the photo opportunities for their candidate. I'd further guess that the first thing out of President Obama's mouth is, "How can I help?" or "What do you need?" I've met folks from Jersey... you don't ask the favor and not express concern and get away with it.

(867 posts)I am actually quite taken with Gov Christie at the moment. Blowhard? Sure. Dedicated to his state? Absolutely!

(4,876 posts)he was sincere in his praise for Obama. I was in Nashville during the big flood there a few years ago and while people were out helping each other I noticed no one was asking what their political affiliation was. I helped Republicans and Democrats alike and Republicans and Democrats alike helped us.
When something bad like this happens most people see past the political football game, we stop being Republicans or Democrats and go back to being Americans.

(17,857 posts)1. He administers the coup de gras to a political rival - Romney in White House no 2016 run for him
2. He sets himself up as the bipartisan non-crazy Republican
3. He gets first in line for consideration of aid (something Bloomberg should have thought about)
Romney should learn to never put potential candidates for the next presidential election cycle as surrogates in the first election cycle. On the other hand incumbents running have no such restriction (Obama could care less if Hillary Clinton, Andrew Cuomo, or someone else competent becomes president after him). Depending on how his second term goes, the Republicans could conceivably be running against two superb former presidents campaigning for the next nominee. That is a heck of a weapon. I just don't see W. campaigning in the next cycle (no We Won't Miss Him Yet). The eventual Republican nominee will only have a bench of also rans also longing for the presidential brass ring. It will be a repeat of 2012 in that regard.

(21,786 posts)That includes working with Federal emergency responders and disaster relief agencies, and working with the President. Under the circumstances what's he going to say? "New Jersey doesn't need the Federal government, fuck off. And Obama is still a total failure as a leader!" He can't really say that without looking like a massive prick. And, honestly, there's no place for partisanship in this situation. I think the desire to ascribe his behaviour to political calculation is misguided.

(1,451 posts)There is nothing Ex Governor Romney can give him right now. This Storm was a little more than that spare change in Ex Governor Romney's pocket. Its not like he can go to Walmart and buy a Shoreline. New Jersey is where Gov. Christie has grown up and lived his life. It is one thing to grow up and see developmental changes, but it is another to see complete and total devastation to a place you realize you truly LOVE more than any Political mantra. And if it means giving the President his KUDOS, then for the rebuilding of his State so be it. A very small price to pay for relief to hard hit families. Governor Christie is doing the right thing. He may be a big blow hard at times, but the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy is bigger than blowhard rhetoric. I would just like to say to our Community Organizer, You are truly an inspiration in Leadership!!!!!! And I am glad you know how to Organize the Community and FEMA response. Thank you for helping the survivors of Hurricane Sandy.
