11. GWB liked to say history would judge him.

That was simply an exercise in kicking the can down the road. Regardless, history is here now and he's not being judged well.

14. He will never escape his blunder in Iraq.

But I don't see him sinking much lower.

6. Reagan was helped for years in polls like this

Notably by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute. His glimmer has faded, however, since we finally realized his trickle-down theory was never anything more than a scam to make rich people richer.

5. Lyndon Johnson is too high.

Vietnam.

John F Kennedy should be higher. He stopped nuclear war.

13. ..and the Vietnam War.

Plus Lyndon was a bully and treated staffers horribly.

Most of what you mention would have been done in a Kennedy 2nd term.

I really wish 22 November 1963 would not have happened.

17. Lyndon got it done, though.

It was like the devil doing God's work. I read Caro's four-volume (so far) bio of him, and what kept going through my head, over and over, "this horrible man was in the right place at the right time." FDR recognized that and knew how to use him: the Hill Country of Texas did not have electricity when FDR took office. It wasn't that the utilities wouldn't make money. They just wouldn't make enough money to suit them the first two years. FDR send Lyndon to get it done, and he did.

7. LBJ at #8 and Nixon at #28 are both too high - Vietnam and Watergate can't just be dismissed as

"minor" blemishes on otherwise good records; IMO, Vietnam knocks Johnson out of the top 15 and Watergate should put Nixon in the bottom 10.

18. James Buchanan deserves a recount

His principal sin was being ineffective and ignorant about how to deal with a crisis. Not much different than Trump with the Covid 19 pandemic. But Trump also openly betrayed national intelligence secrets to the Russians and tried to actually end the Constitutional democracy. It didn't trigger a civil war (yet!) but the harms he caused were deliberate as well as poorly executed. Plus he spent his entire tenure mostly just enriching himself and his numbskulled offspring.

In my book he's ten times worse than Buchanan's mere ineptitude.
