MSNBC edges out CNN for Total Viewership Win during First January Sixth Viewing

https://www.thewrap.com/capitol-riot-congressional-hearing-ratings/amp/

Iím happy today I was one of the 1.6 million who watched on MSNBC. The nightly ratings are towards the end of the story.

1. Two reasons

First, MSNBC is a far better network than CNN from a journalistic point of view.

Second, MSNBC has far better reporters and analysts. It is far more intelligent and nuanced and liberal (gasp!) than CNN.

As much as some people on DU complain about MSNBC, itís still the better news outlet. CNN has no personality and is stuck in the middle political marsh.

ETA: As Iím writing this, CNN is on the TV in the hotel room where Iím staying. They are totally in support of the January 6 committee. Remarkable and itís about time!

3. I think CNN is generally fine on the whole on specific issues.

The problem with CNN is their need to have voices from the right and they invite the worst type of Trumpists on their shows. And CNN lets them talk without much push back (most of the times) and it gets unbearable to watch. I am all for voices from both sides but you have to make a decision when they take a deep right turn after TFG and they started going into all kinds of crazy nonsense. I don't mind the Adam Kissinger or Liz Chaney types of republicans. I don't agree with some of their stances but I can at least agree to disagree with them. But not the Trumpists.

Matter of fact, I think CNN international is actually a really good news network when I watch it overseas. But once we get back to CNN in US, it just gets very unbalanced and crazy.

6. CNN International is so much better than CNN domestic

On the international front you have Christiane Amanpour, while here we get Kayleigh McEnany and Rick Santorum. Oh yeah, I just remembered that guy Jeffery Lord.....blech. And frickin' Ken Kuchenelli was on there for a while as a commentator!

7. It's not just their journalists. It's also how they present their news items.

There isn't a need for bringing in both democrats and republicans into each news item. So they present their news as just news. There isn't a constant need to bring democrats or republicans into the segment and have them talk about their side of things.

Climate change is just an accepted fact and they talk about it without having democrats on one side and republicans on the other. COVID is just COVID and it's not a mask or not mask, vaccine or not vaccine debate.

4. I don't see this as a good thing and here's why

We know that MSNBC viewers largely at least lean left.

CNN's audience largely doesn't have such a focused demographic politically.

8. That article is dated July 29, 2021

I'm pretty sure the piece was discussing an earlier hearing from last summer.

12. It's cool

I've been checking in on the Nielsen site and TVLine and so far, they've yet to post ratings from yesterday.

We'll see how that goes.

11. I happened onto this at Wonkette yesterday.

CNNís New Boss Remaking Network Into Centrist Safe Space For Republicans

snip:

CNN's new boss, Chris Licht, is on a mission to make the cable network less partisan and polarizing, sort of like 1960s television. "The Beverly Hillbillies" provided quality entertainment for all audiences, not divisive political commentary, and thatís the direction Licht is taking CNN. Well doggies!

Axios reported Tuesday that Licht is closely evaluating "personalities and programmingĒ that apparently became too ďpartisan and combativeĒ during Donald Trumpís presidency as democracy crumbled around us. Fox News is overtly partisan and combative and regularly cleans CNNís clock in the ratings, so maybe Licht should make CNN more like Fox but just accurate and not evil.

Licht will give existing talent "a chance to prove they're willing to uphold the network's values so that they don't tarnish CNN's journalism brand.Ē If they canít adjust, theyíll presumably join Chris Cuomo on the unemployment line.
