Before TV which I assume would make and obese persons election that much harder. See this Forbes story for more information [link:http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2011/09/28/a-history-of-fat-presidents/|

Seriously, that's all you can say at a time like this?

There are millions of overweight Americans; weight is not the fucking issue.

I wish SOME DUers would get over this bigotry.

I weigh a whopping 125 dripping wet but have a very close friend who tops out at 250. She has tried every diet and exercise routine known to man with little success. I am sick of people who focus on appearance instead of what is inside. Does she have a good heart? Absolutely. and a good mind as well. people are cruel.

He once got stuck in the White House bathtub, and have to have a special super-sized version installed.

His weight is irrelevant to his Presidency.

He is the Republican who almost single-handedly changed the party from progressive to conservative. Teddy Roosevelt sort of groomed Taft to be his successor in the progressive movement. When Taft took a hard turn to the right, Roosevelt was so upset, he formed the progressive Bull Moose party, and ran for the Presidency under its banner. He lost to Wilson, and died somewhat embittered that his progressive legacy had been trashed by Taft.

Before you nannies all flame me - I am NOT attacking overweight people. I am just pointing out a simple fact - this is unattractive, and the public doesn't like their presidents to look completely unfit.

He's doing a fine job right now being NJ governor during a crisis, BTW. I don't think he's a bad person. But he can never win a presidential election, which suits me fine. Let him stay governor.

I just wish people would get over this shit.

Don't any of you know overweight people?

I do, and I'm sure there are overweight DUers, too.

Just not an issue for me when millions are suffering...

How many times can DUers point out that he's Fat?

The choice to be helped or not is up to the individual. Some are unlucky because they carry that gene (obesity).

But it is a medical condition, like diabetes, for example. My post is NOT to denigrate anyone. But to encourage people facing that problem to get help, which also has the psychological aspect about it.

I have the opposite problem: trouble keeping weight on, so I get the constant "are you tweeker/anorexic/heroin addict?"

Weight is dependent on many factors and some of that is choice, but it's not progressive to base your opinion on someone solely on their fucking size.

It's bullshit, and I view you the same as those who hate someone for other physical attributes.

Hi,

I think its easy to get caught up with debates about whether its right to discriminate based on appearance because it happens. Although weight is more complex than say skin colour because it does affect ones self-confidence to an extent (Although some people get past it).

I dropped 70 pounds in 6 months and I can say that it completely changed how people I knew treated me and how strangers related to me. Both men and women.

It took me 18 years to drop the 70 pounds I put on so i have a good basis for before and after.

People essentially make this judgement: staying healthy takes discipline. Overweight people cant control their compulsions or dont value their appearance as much. As such they believe them to be less fit as leaders. Since discipline is often seen as a key quality of a leader and overachiever.

thats my 2 cents.

regardless of what anyone calls it, is a negative to too many people. Americans expect our presidents to at least LOOK like they are taking care of themselves physically. Being morbidly obese sends a signal that a person might have emotional or self-control or even health issues that might interfere with a high stress job like president.

It's not the Gilded Age anymore, when obesity was seen as a sign of material success and prosperity.
