1. Why is he

Running against Washington- and not the GOP Traitors?

I hope he puts that in his ads - and ALSO addresses the folks in inner cities left behind as a result of white flight to small towns and suburbs.

I don't think any GOP voters (Trump 2016 and 2020) are going to vote for him -

And he needs to get his ground game going in Philadelphia and the Lehigh Valley.

4. "I have said this before. Donald Trump is very popular in Pennsylvania.

We cannot afford to underestimate his popularity in our state. And I have emphasized that continuously.

~ John Fetterman

Remember, while house members get elected by their little district's constituents, often drawn to be very safe and partisan, senators are elected by the popular, majority vote of entire states. Very few senators run partisan campaigns.

Remembering also that they're actually supposed to represent the majority in office, honestly and in good faith. No bait and switch after election.

30. :) Yes. Throw everything at him and beat his ass like a drum.

For me, Oz's fake diet scams are the biggest CAN'T TRUST THIS SCOUNDREL/WACKO red flag, even worse than being endorsed by tRump, who no doubt admires him for choosing to make money illicitly instead of honorably.

Though Fetterman denies ever calling himself a Democratic Socialist, he supported Bernie Sanders and Repubs are already hitting him with a "LW radical" ad that shows how they hope to beat him.

Which brings us to Fetterman's ad in the OP -- just an ordinary hard-working Pennsylvania guy with a bit of bipartisan populist grievance.

“That’s how you win as a Democrat in this state: You do well in the big cities, do well in the suburbs and then you cut the margins in more rural counties,” Mr. Mikus said. "John Fetterman has the ability to do that.”

Go, Dems! We'll be talking about this one all the way through November 8.

49. :) True. Of course, senate GE candidates do move to positions

acceptable to as many voters in both parties as possible and repellent to as few as possible. How much change this requires depends on how similar or different it is to what they ran on in the primaries. And tRump's currently not selling as well as he did.

Negative populist grievances feed similar appetites among those inclined on both left and right, so Fetterman may decide to deepen those themes, and his "outsider" identity, especially in rural areas. Or he might go more mainstream to campaign on positive, will-do Democratic progressive programs. And both while they see what's working better where, but rubbing off the pointy edges.

As you say for changing. He and Oz have advanced to the big league now, after all.

5. Why not? It worked for trump...

he lied about it, of course, because trump. But the fact is TFG ran as an "ousider" that would 'clean up' Washington DC.

At least Fetterman is much more likely to be telling the truth about fighting corruption.

Besides, there are several months left. This will not be the only ad, I'm sure. Hell, he hasn't started the "Dr Oz is not even a Pennsylvanian" line yet. You'd think that should be effective.

Seems like very misguided messaging when Democrats narrowly control Congress and the White House.

We need to win this seat. Hopefully his team improves the messaging.

And is anyone in PA unaware of Fetterman's looks?

No mention of Republicans. Strikes me as odd. I was looking forward to seeing an inspiring roll out of ads for a seat we need to win.

and it seems to me that he has a multitude of ways to accomplish that.

At the same time I'd like to see him not alienate Democrats who may not appreciate the message that Fetterman is running against Washington, when we are in the majority there.

These two new ads are problematic.

24. I hope so

I've been side eyeing a lot of white folks in 'swing' states since 2008.

I really don't trust them after 2016 and 2020 to stand up straight, fly right, and be loyal Americans . . . not after they voted for Trump twice.

But - if as another poster says he will get white folks to vote for a Democratic Party member in 2022 - then I'm here for it.

I do think - from the black spaces I'm in - IRL and online- there are going to be some MASSIVE grievances from us in 2024. And it's about damn time. I can wait until mid November - but we need to unleash on America. And that means black folks in Philly and Pittsburgh haranguing and harassing this guy to do what we NEEED him to do for us.

No more of paying in and having it handed over to white folks. No more, no more in 24.

"Can't we all be vigilanti's with a loaded weapon chasing down someone we may perceive as a 'bad guy', Mr Fetterman?"

I really want to hear him answer this question publicly, on camera, in a debate.

This cannot be a 'do as I say, not as I do' matter.

And following the Uvalde slaughter, weapons being debated & legislated, avoiding answering that question is cowardly.

This is a big issue.
He needs to speak up about it.

25. That's a decent ad, but

in the middle portion it breaks down and, at least to me, Fetterman seems defensive. As if he fears being branded as a "vigilante."

I'd like to see him turn his brave stance of running towards gunfire to protect others into an advantage, instead of something that he seems almost apologetic about.

I don't think anyone doubts the man's commitment to his heavy African American constituency.

Those are the people his risked his life to protect.

Contrast this with what happened in Uvalde. Contrast this with the character of Mehmet Öz.

This could be a winning issue as opposed to one that feels like it needs to be explained away.

My opinion anyway.

17. This is an instance where if I were Fetterman I'd aggressively work to turn

this incident to his advantage.

No one believes that he is a racist or that his acting to try to stop a shooting in his black-majority town, where most victims of gun violence are African American, was motivated by racial animus. Quite to the contrary. He was the mayor of this town and risked his own life to protect others.

I'd ask voters the question, "if your life was in danger from an active shooting in your neighborhood, which way to you believe Dr Mehmet Öz would run?"

Or something like that. It would be a devastating take down IMO.

I watched one of the debates and he got positively clobbered by both Lamb and Kennyata over an incident he knew would come up. He just stood there.

He could make this a positive. A positive with black voters who his risked his life to protect, and a positive with "independent" voters who would not hold this against him.

That's my 2 cents.

That won't be on rural voters minds either. But sooner or later he's going to have to lean into the Gen X and Older black folks in Philly and Pittsburgh to get over the finish line.

Fetterman can quite honestly claim that he did exactly the opposite.

He didn't wait. He was not a vigilante, but rather a mayor who ran towards the gunfire in the hopes of stopping any killings.

That counts for a lot.

No one thinks he was acting out of racial animus, quite the opposite.

The nation is in a period of disgust with public officials who stood by while innocents were slaughtered. Fetterman did the opposite.

I believe that man he stopped is supporting Fetterman, is that correct?

We can not afford to have the GOP pick up this seat and Fetterman has a path to turn this issue into a huge positive IMO.

BTW I have been a long time lurker and I can tell you that you and I are in alignment on virtually every issue. I really don't want to lose this race. And I see how this incident can be honestly framed to Fetterman's electoral advantage.

Having a politician who would run towards gunfire to protect the residents of his largely African American city can very reasonably be turned into a political positive, in my estimation.

Particularly post-Uvalde, where we witnessed the opposite happen.

And with an opponent like Mehmet Öz--a guy who strikes me as the last person I'd chose to be my "wingman."

Again, isn't the guy that Fetterman stopped supporting him?

In believe that man supports Fetterman.

I don't believe for a moment that Fetterman "was playing cop." He was the mayor of this town and felt a duty to act. I think voters appreciate such heroism.

He did not shoot someone who was running away from a scene of gunfire. He stopped him and ascertained that he guy was not the shooter. Fetterman kept his head.

It could have turned out differently. He might have run into the shooter. Fetterman put his life in jeopardy to find out.

I applaud his actions. I hope he embraces it. Acting to protect lives in his largely African American city--one that was plagued with gun violence--is a winning issue IMO. And across the board.

Nothing remotely "fucked up" about that in my point of view.

I suspect voters would feel the same way about a mayor who was willing to put his life on the line to protect theirs, because that's what happened.

And I may be misinformed, but I thought the man he stopped was running away from the scene (and was the only person in view) which reasonably made him a person of suspicion.

In my eyes Fetterman acted both reasonably and heroically. I'd like to see his campaign own that narrative.

advantageous to Fetterman's odds of winning.

I'm not from PA, but my gut tells me it is a winning issue if he embraces his brave response without apology.

He could have stood by--as happen in Uvalde--instead he rushed toward the gunfire. That's a winning issue for a man who has to put together a coalition of voters in PA IMO.

He will also need to have answers on guns. Having a sensible position gun control seems to me to to have fewer downsides when they are embraced by a politician who was willing to stop violence by picking up his own gun. This incident provides him a layer of insulation, as I see it.

heroism and acting in the moment to save lives at the risk of losing one's own.

I don't suppose we will reach a meeting of the minds on this one, which is okay, as we have a great deal in common politically and this is likely a rare instance where we read the situation differently.

12. This is a great ad, hits exactly the right tone

OK, there is some "grievance politics", but for people in the rural, less populated counties, it will hit home. These small towns have been left just as much behind as depressed urban areas and the old mill towns. This is what people in Pennsylvania hunger for.

The other day saw an ad from the NRSC with the usual "socialist", "Bernie" yada yada, but what the Rs don't realize is that Bernie is wildly popular in the rural areas of the state. In the 2016 Dem primary, he won all those counties against Hillary. It was Bernie's populist economic message that resonated; Fetterman is echoing that.
