Is Marcos Jr about to win in the Philippines?
Is this for real?
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-61344609 Voting has closed in the Philippines after millions queued across the islands to choose their next president. The man tipped to win the presidency is Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr, the son of the nation's former dictator. Opinion polls have suggested he may see a landslide victory, meaning the Marcos clan ousted by a people's revolt 36 years ago could reclaim power.

1. My husband spent much time there in the 1980s
He is absolutely horrified that this is happening.

2. Yes
Unfortunately he has been polling ahead for months and looks to be winning. The documentary on Netflix about his mom and all the corruption was eye opening. Amazing how much in her own world the mom is.

3. He can't be as bad as Duterte.
At least he opposes extrajudicial killing of drug users.

4. Oddly enough it isn't hard to imagine a Barron Trump PAC sometime down the road. Political
dynasties are pretty common.

8. Can't they read history books?
This new generation is getting their "knowledge" from social media and it is totally blurring facts with fiction.

12. According to my wife who is originally from the Philippines..
sees the social media problem much worse there. They seem to believe the craziest stuff they read on social media.

7. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer there in late 70's.
I was so proud of the Filipino people for taking down Marcos but now I am shocked they are about to elect another Marcos back into power. My wife who was originally from the Philippines blames social media for spreading all sorts of disinformation supporting Marcos.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Could be another era of a Marcos dictatorship ahead. |

25. Ha! Good question. I think nothing other than a nickname.
Filipinos love nicknames usually some play on their names. My wife's nickname is Ming which is also means nothing and is loosely linked to her real name.

10. My Filipino partner supports Marcos
He and his family immigrated here in the 1980s. I asked about this election, because hell if I know anything about Filipino politics.
He and his family want Marcos to win. I noted the former dictatorial corruption stuff. The reply, and I quote, "He's going to redeem the family name." Half their family are still in the Philippines and they visit often (until Covid). That seems to be the running familial opinion. The only thing I knew going in was that Pacquiao is a raging asshole. |

18. Another victory for Chinese social media manipulation. Marcos Jr is the most pro-China option
He's consistently pro-China where Duterte is wildly inconsistent. Robredo is seen as neutral on China, and no anti-Chinese candidate was able to get any traction.

20. +1
Unfortunately that appears to be the situation. China wants to dominate the Philippines and they are slowly but surely getting there.

Just like his daughter, Sara, who is going to be Bongbong Marcos's Vice President.
