America, we need to have a serious conversation if this piece of work was supposed to be the shoe-in

Democrat Carol Glanville pulled off an upset in a conservative West Michigan state House election Tuesday, defeating a controversial Republican candidate who gained national noteriety for remarks about rape and conspiracy theories related to QAnon and Jews.

Carol Glanville, a Walker city commissioner, defeated Robert "RJ" Regan by getting 7,288 votes to Regan's 5,697 votes in a special election to fill the 74th district seat, according to unofficial election results from the Kent County Clerk's office.

“West Michigan values of integrity, decency and care for the common good won tonight,” Glanville said in a statement Tuesday night. “We are united in fundamental ways, and I will take our values and concerns to the Capitol to affect positive change.”

Regan had been favored to win the reliably Republican district after scoring an upset win in a special primary election. But he was scorned by Democrats and Republicans alike for a series of offensive comments, most notably a remark during a livestream hosted by a conservative group that he told his daughters, “if rape is inevitable, you should just lie back and enjoy it.”

Michigan House candidate Robert "RJ" Regan denounced for comments about rape

Top Michigan Republicans on Tuesday denounced a state House candidate over his remarks about rape, the latest in a number of controversial comments from the man who narrowly won a special GOP primary a week ago. Robert "RJ" Regan made the statements Sunday in a livestream hosted by a conservative group that was posted on Rumble.

He advocated for decertifying the 2020 presidential election, telling another participant who said it is too late to do anything that her attitude is like what he tells his three daughters: "Well if rape is inevitable, you should just lie back and enjoy it."

... what?

Michigan House Republican primary winner calls Ukraine ‘culpable’ in Russia invasion

As many around the world condemn Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, a Republican primary winner vying for a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives says Ukraine shares blame.

Robert Regan, now the heavy favorite to win the Republican-leaning 74th state House District seat in Kent County, told MLive/The Grand Rapids Press he doesn’t agree with the “mainstream media” narrative that Ukraine is completely innocent for its part in the Russian invasion that began Feb. 24.

... seriously?

Robert Regan, the Republican nominee for a safely conservative state House seat in Michigan, has frequently re-posted antisemitic content and shared his own extreme views on Jews.

Regan is in a good position to win a May 3 special election for a vacant seat representing Kent County, Michigan’s 74th state district, after winning a crowded Republican primary last week by a narrow margin of 81 votes (according to unofficial tallies). Michigan’s Republican Party congratulated Regan on Wednesday for winning the primary.

In May 2021, Regan’s personal Facebook page shared two posts, still visible on his page as of Monday, in which he expressed antisemitic opinions. In one, he shared an image of a quote branded by the logo of Smoloko News, a now-defunct antisemitic website. The quote described “feminism” as “a Jewish program to degrade and subjugate white men.”

In January of last year, Regan shared a link to an antisemitic “family history” of the Rothschilds, the Jewish banking family often at the center of conspiracy theories about Jews and world banking domination. Two months later, he shared a meme made by a QAnon influencer that called “(((Them)))” the “real virus” in a post calling public health measures to combat COVID-19 “nonsense.” The triple parentheses, or echo symbol, is used online by antisemites to identify Jews.

... voters almost chose this guy?
