Have We Discussed the Democratic Senate Debate in Carlisle, PA?

Last edited Fri Apr 29, 2022, 08:50 PM - Edit history (1)

I recall an OP on the Republican debate but thought the lack of discussion on the Democratic side was . . . strange.

I watched the debate in its entirety. The debate was held on Monday night at Dickinson College in Carlisle. In addition to Fetterman, Lamb and Kenyatta, Jenkintown Borough Councilwoman Alex Khalil was on the debate stage.

At the end, my first reaction was that Malcolm Kenyatta is a very good debater. He's sharp, clear and didn't miss a beat. He doesn't stand a chance in hell in this race but clearly is a strong voice for the future.

Up front, I'd say Kenyatta won the debate.

John Fetterman (of whom I'm a fan) was on the defensive most the night. As the frontrunner, he's a big target (in more ways than one ). What became obvious was that the debate forum is not Fetterman's forte. He looked uncomfortable for most of the debate and that affected his performance. His responses need to be sharper, cleaner, less vague.

He was, for instance, on point about reproductive rights being sacred, a litmus test for any and all judges. The moderator reacted to that answer and asked if the other participants agreed. Everyone said yes and repeated the once boogie-man phrase 'litmus test.' In that moment, John Fetterman had control of the stage.

But then, not so much in answering to the 2013 jogger incident. Kenyatta hammered Fetterman on that issue and in a way did the man a favor (at least, I hope so). It underscores the need for Fetterman to put this issue to bed, defuse it, before the Republicans attempt to crucify him. And they will try just that.

Conor Lamb, not unsurprisingly, gave a polished, poised performance. His main argument is that he's the more electable candidate, safe, middle-of-the-road, appealing to swing voters although he's somewhat defensive being reminded of that. He, too, went after Fetterman but not with the vigor or delight of Kenyatta.

And then, there was Councilwoman Khalil who reminded me of my favorite aunt. Very amicable, passionate, a bit frantic in some of her answers but genuine in her democratic values. Also kind, a virtue too often overlooked. Alex Kahlil is someone I could easily be friends with.

I suspect few saw this debate. I managed to catch it on C-span and it didn't start until 9:30 pm.

I really, really want John Fetterman to improve his debate skills, let himself go and come across as the man so many voters have responded to, the man we see at his rallies.

He does that? He'll win in a landslide.

I submitted my request for mail in ballot 2/18/22 and still haven’t received it yet- Do u think that’s unusual???
I’ve tracked it but, nothing says it’s been mailed yet.

There was a note up at the Delaware Co. election board website indicating a huge number of ballot requests. They didn't start mailing them out until April 21st. I think the first date you can use the drop boxes is on May7th. So, you still have time and, of course, the election itself isn't until the 17th. If you become concerned I'd call the local office. They're usually friendly and helpful.

As for the debate? I don't think it was advertised very well and only a few venues carried it live. I had the dates all screwed up and literally stumbled on it over on C-span.

You're welcome for the summary, btw.

I had applied for it on 2/15/22. I was following the city's election prep status updates on the City Commissioners' website as they slogged along and when I saw this - https://www.philadelphiavotes.com/en/home/item/2106-2022-general-candidates-with-button-numbers I knew they were finally getting close (because obviously that is what would also be printed on the ballots) -

With all the insanity about the loon Commonwealth Court judge's ruling about Act-77 and the stay on that by the state Supreme Court (basically allowing the Primary to go forward with the mail-in ballots), as I understand, the apparent hold-up had to do with the state legislative redistricting which took a long time. They had give notice to candidates running for those seats since some had to switch districts (and were given the go-ahead to start getting their nominating petitions in order), plus we had some re-jiggering of the lines for our own Councilmanic Districts, and finally all the candidates needed to be assigned ballot positions/numbers.

IMHO, it was similar to what you're describing. Lamb and Kenyatta spent all of their time attacking Fetterman, and then Fetterman would defend himself.

Kenyatta in particular really tore into Fetterman. Lamb got a few jabs in, too. Only Councilwoman Khalil eschewed the aggressive posturing.

Since he appears to be in control, why waste his good stuff on his fellow Democrats? Just stay even keeled for now, and become an attack dog when it matters, against the gop candidate.

Because this is going to be a vicious race, pivotal for control of the Senate. Maybe you're right. Perhaps, John Fetterman has a solid rejoinder when it comes to the jogger incident, something that will shut it down and take the air out of the opposition, be it Oz or McCormick. If that happens, I'll be the first to say: brilliant move!

Make it so.

the presidency, I will never vote for him in a primary. I used to like the guy...not anymore. Braddock is not a great area although as Mayor, Fetterman did a remarkable job cleaning it up and bringing manufacturing back too. Fetterman heard a gunshot...he came out armed. I would have too...called the cops. No one was shot. And as the Mayor of Braddock, I think Fetterman had a right to check it out. Now the 'victim' is in prison for kidnapping for ransom among other charges.

You know how Republicans are and how they run campaigns. They'll weaponize the incident in anyway they can which is why Fetterman needs to defuse it, throw the whole thing back in their ugly faces.

He needs to do what he did in that vid, a compressed yet equally passionate response to put the incident away for good and remind voters that Republicans are the last people on earth who would care one iota about a black jogger, about a town like Braddock, about anything else but their own political, anti-democratic futures.

That's all I'm saying.

I have seen him before and was immensely impressed. He has command of the issues and very good ideas about solutions. Sure, he won't win because PA is weighed down with Trumpsters. Mr Kenyatta is not only a great debater but unafraid to speak the quiet parts out loud. We have so much talent in the Dem party that out strips anyone the GQP has in intellect, common sense, honesty, compassion, experience, and humaneness. If life were fair the GOP would never get elected to anything at any level.

I missed this one so I don't know. I do know that Fetterman won't attack fellow Democrats and since that is basically all his opponents do...what can he say about it. However, Fetterman can win. He is double digits ahead of Connor Lamb and even more against Kenyetta.

"The state's Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, who has positioned himself as the choice for liberal voters in a four-way race in the Democratic primary, has "very likely" support of 44% of Democratic voters polled by Monmouth University earlier this month.

He's leading U.S. Rep. Conor Lamb, a congressman from western Pennsylvania, with 23%, Philadelphia state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta with 14% and activist and Jenkintown borough councilor Alexandria Khalil with 8%."

I've listened to Kenyatta before. He was a staunch supporter of Joe Biden during the 2020 election, and he's an impressive speaker, the sort that makes your ears perk up. I have no doubt he'll have a long, successful career.

The only exception I'd make to some of Kenyatta's comments Monday night was accusing Fetterman of posing as a 'white savior' when he talks about his mayoral tenure in Braddock. Thought that remark was a cheap shot and I've never gotten that vibe from Fetterman. Yes, the man is proud of what he and the community accomplished and started to turn around. But I've never picked up any arrogance in those stories or a me, me, me white man attitude. Quite the reverse actually.

On the other hand, yes, if life were fair no GOP candidate would be competitive for dog catcher, anywhere, ad infinitum.
