Romney speaks with FEMA
Davenport, Iowa (CNN) Mitt Romney spoke Monday with officials from the Federal Emergency Management Administration and the National Weather Service as Hurricane Sandy slammed into the U.S. East Coast.
Romney joined the representatives from the agencies, as well as officials from the Department of Homeland Security, on a 20-minute phone call at 4 p.m. ET while the GOP nominee was in Davenport, Iowa for an event, according to campaign spokesman Kevin Madden.
The presidential candidate received updates on the progress of the Category 1 hurricane, as well as the status of federal, state and local disaster relief efforts, Madden said. Romney was further briefed on the potential effects to states and communities in the storm's immediate aftermath.
Romney's comments about FEMA, made at a CNN Republican primary debate in June 2011, received renewed attention Monday. At the time, Romney said he favored states taking on a large role in disaster relief. "Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction," he said.
"I was speaking today with the National Weather Service and the folks at FEMA as they're preparing for the landfall of a very dangerous hurricane. It's going to affect a lot of families, it already has," Romney said at the event.

Doesn't make him any less a jackass who shouldn't be bothering FEMA or any other government agencies since he's so damn set against government, first responders, and FEMA as well.

(154,021 posts)This is part of succession of government protocols.
I would try to stay out of politics on this one.

(85,975 posts)Again, he doesn't believe FEMA should be part of the federal government. Who's he think he's fooling acting like he's a part of what they're doing. If he had his way, he'd turn the federal govt.'s back on FEMA.

(56 posts)I AM a Democrat and supporter of the President for re-election. However I believe that it is Gvr. Romney's desire to seem presdential that has our ire raised up. This is not a campaign event...this is a natural disaster. A candidate inserting himself into the midst of a machine at work is inexcusable. If I were the head of FEMA I would have handed the phone to my greenest intern to field questions from this poseur. President Obama gets updates in order to inform his decision making process as President. Romney is asserting himself in order to not miss out on some press coverage while the spotlight has been stolen.

(85,975 posts). . . too much pussyfooting around the FACT that Romney doesn't want to have to lift a finger for the states in these emergencies as president. I don't have to respect his political desire for a prop. Nor does the President (although, he's certainly within protocol in extending this privilege). I don't have to respect this, at all. I'm not out of line, at all in expecting these things to be dealt with plainly; instead of all the pussyfooting around like Romney cares one wit about FEMA.
Can you comprehend that?

Does Rmoney represent an agency? Is he part of Homeland (In)Security? Is he a Governor? A Congressional Representative? Does he have ANY function that might entitle him to be included? Not that I'm aware of. Being a candidate is hardly a qualifier in and of itself in a National Emergency, one would think?

(10,942 posts)The sitting President leaves that to agency aids. Romney was given such an update. President Obama got those updates as a candidate, but now President Obama kept the information private and didn't attempt to make a fucking campaign issue of that information.
