They can cause more damage by being rolled ashore than they can if they just weather it.

An utterly stupid move. Number one priority of any responsible captain is the safety of crew and passengers. Boat itself is a distant second.
And, as events have proven, obviously the ship wasn't safer at sea. A square-rigged sailing ship has neither the stability, speed, nor manuverability of a modern motor vessel. They should have found a harbor to tuck into several days ago. Really dumb.

Really stupid move being out in a hurricane. Plus, they endanger the lives of the Coast Guard who rescued them. The Bounty wasn't so large that they couldn't have found a snug harbor, where the crew is safe and CG don't have to risk their lives on a rescue.

because a DUer is still posting stupid-assed CNN "jokes" and there are a few males on DU whose sole focus is Erin Burnett in wet conditions.

No worries.

She was coming up the Piscataqua River/Portsmouth, NH this summer and we were leaving the river for an PM sail to the Isle of Shoals.. She was in overhaul at a shipyard in Boothbay Harbor, ME from 10/3-10/20. IMHO, she had no business leaving for St. Petersburg, FL, given the potential and advance warning of this storm. She should have found a safe place above NH to wait out this storm, IMHO.

It's a replica of the original that they use in movies about the Bounty mutiny. The original was sunk by the mutineers and never found.

we rode on a different ship, out on the lake for awhile, and the Bounty sailed past us.
she was a beautiful ship...too bad.
maybe they'll make a replica of the replica? (it was 30% larger than the original ship, to accommodate the movie).

The entire US Navy has left Norfolk for this storm ... I don't know how seaworthy this replica ship was, but they made the traditionally right decision

Edited: the fleet was originally ordered to go out but that was changed. My point about traditional handling of storms remains the same.
