https://www.dezeen.com/2022/04/14/air-protein-meat-alternative-recycled-carbon-dioxide/California-based start-up Air Protein has developed a meat alternative called Air Meat, which is made using microbes that turn recycled carbon dioxide into protein. Described by Air Protein as "the meat of tomorrow", Air Meat was designed to replicate the flavour and texture of real meat products such as steak.
"Our vision is to build the first carbon-negative meat company"
While beef generates 70 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions for every kilogram produced, while also causing widespread deforestation, Air Protein founder Lisa Dyson claims that its protein production emits far less carbon and doesn't require land or animals. "We look at the analysis from cradle to gate, prior to when the product is consumed," she told Dezeen. "On this basis, our vision is to build the first carbon-negative meat company."
Air Protein is among a number of companies, including Finland-based Solar Foods, that are making meat and dairy substitutes from captured emissions in a bid to mitigate the climate impact of agriculture. However, Air Protein's process makes use of CO2 captured from factories rather than from the atmosphere. In the future, the company is planning to use direct air capture units to remove CO2 directly from the air.
But regardless of where it comes from, the carbon contained in the steak ultimately reenters the atmosphere after being eaten, as the consumer exhales it as carbon dioxide through the process of respiration. This means Air Protein's meat alternative doesn't directly reduce the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. Instead, Dyson says its climate potential lies in avoiding emissions and resource use elsewhere. "The amazing thing about our process is that it can be located virtually anywhere in the world, with no arable land required at all," she said.

(25,851 posts)Doesn't look much like any meat I eat.
Oh, wait, it says steak. Clearly the people making it aren't even remotely familiar with what steak looks like.

(25,851 posts)the flavor and texture of steak or other real meat, simply haven't eaten real meat in centuries. Maybe longer.

(21,106 posts)No one is going to force you to purchase this. Why would you poopoo it? Sheesh. Are you unaware how detrimental the meat industry is to the earth?

(25,851 posts)as claimed. That's easily researchable.
And I long ago learned that if someone tells me to substitute (non-fat yogurt for sour cream, fake meat for the real thing) something that's supposedlier healthier for a "bad" thing and that I won't be able to tell the difference, what I know is that they have no sense of taste. It's the pretense that the fake stuff is as good as the real stuff.
I'm reminded of a friend who recently gave a list of "bad" foods she'd avoided for years, while smoking cigarettes.

(8,701 posts)What about all the air, water, and land poisoned with herbicides and pesticides? We already have fake meat - with high glyphosate levels. Nothing is black and white.

(14,529 posts)That is an industry which causes a lot of animal suffering -especially factory farms which I believe produce most of the meat that people consume..
I would buy it just to support their growth.

(12,369 posts)I do try to eat a little healthier while on the road,
I have a small reefer and a 2 burner electric hot plate in my truck so I try to stock up on things like fruit, salads, raw veggies, etc., or if a restaurant is within walking distance of where I've parked for the night, them I will eat there, but I'm just not going to give up my beef, chicken, pork, I am too fond of them.
If others want to try it, more power to them, it's that freedom of choice thingy and far be it from me to dissuade others from trying different foods.
Have a great Friday and weekend.

I'd be willing to try it and give it a fair shake. But so far, every one that has claimed the same over the years has tasted awful.

Dont substitute one for another, and all that.

(4,921 posts)And as a vegetarian for 30 years, I don't consume animal products because of environmental and animal rights reasons. Has nothing to do with whether I like meat or not. So having products that get close is a good thing.

(146,288 posts)Yet another Blue Sky, Inc. Startup? Let's see:
Well, they have a pretty website at: https://airprotein.com/
They're not actively seeking investors on that site, but you can apply for a job at the website. Apparently, they need applicants for every conceivable position. Looks like there are not many people on the staff yet.
There is a link, though, to "Get Involved." Fill out the contact form and, I'm sure, someone will get back to you to help you investing in this blue sky project. Oh, yes!
So, if you've been frustrated with investing in "fusion energy," "flying cars," and inexpensive freeway-capable electric vehicles that will "revolutionize transportation," maybe you can look into this as an alternative.

(3,330 posts)After considerably reducing meat consumption last year, we've found several substitutes that taste (and grill) as well as the real thing.
This one looks like a new method I'd be willing to test out.
MarineCombatEngineer
(12,369 posts)but nothing tastes and grills like the real thing, I tried one of Burger King's Impossible Whopper last year, and it sucked, it left a very bad after taste in my mouth and it didn't even smell like a burger, but far be it from me to dissuade anyone from trying new foods, it's just not my thing.
