On Thursday, the House passed a Democratic-sponsored bill to cap the price of insulin at $35 a month for most Americans, an effort to crack down on price-gouging by drug makers who have raised the price of a lifesaving product used by millions of Americans by almost 500 percent in recent years. Some people now pay more than $1,000 a month for insulin to treat diabetes, even with insurance. Democrats had been seeking a way to rein in drugs prices overall in a broader policy proposal, but it had little chance of passing the Senate. Hoping for bipartisan compromise, they siloed the insulin price control as its own measure. Still, only 12 House Republicans voted in favor of a bill thats wildly popular with the American public.
Among those voting no was Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), the GOPs leading troll, who has come up with perhaps one of the most offensive justifications for GOP opposition to the popular bill. In his newsletter Friday, Gaetz told his constituents that he opposed the bill because fat people, not Big Pharma, are responsible for driving up the cost of insulin. He suggested that Type 2 diabetes, which is often linked to obesity, could be cured if only people would workout more and lose weight, at which point they wouldnt need insulin anymore and the drug costs would fall without government intervention.

(4,535 posts)And Type 2 who arent overweight. Dont get me wrong I dont blame overweight people....there are many ways our society has failed them....food deserts, inadequate healthcare, education and so many other things.
A person very close to me was just diagnosed with type 2. Hes 75 years old, exercises everyday, and not overweight. Sometimes it just happens. Myself, I have had 3 blood panels done in the past 5 months for inpatient surgery. Im 61, thin as a rail, and one of those came up with a very high glucose level, fortunately the other two were well within the normal range. However, it was enough for me to think about my diet.
Unfortunately, I live in this POS congressmans district. Its a very high end tourist district. But day to day I see a lot of rich people who are not in a healthy weight range, I guess they can cough up the money for insulin. I also see the disparity of the people who work here to cater to the wealthy, working 2 or three jobs, having to travel 40 miles to just have those jobs, and its like watching hamsters on wheels. Its heartbreaking.
