(Update 8:33 p.m. ET) President Barack Obama has declared a state of emergency in the District of Columbia ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, according to a release from the White House. Obama earlier declared states of emergency for Maryland, Massachusetts and New York.

they declared a few days before Ike hit down here. Red Cross is likely gearing up as well - remember them if you feel like donating in the next few days.

but this is an area that doesn't get hit regularly like we do down here, and it's colder up there (I worry about the elderly without power etc).

folks can preserve their frozen stuff but it will be hell for the elderly and vulnerable
