I'd give her something on the way out. As I approached her on the way out, I had to wait to give her some change because someone else had beat me to it. Made my heart feel good to see others helping her.

...and thought about what I was doing at age 13: watching TV, hanging out in my room, talking to friends on the phone, going outside to play "over the line" at the park...
Then I wondered what I would be feeling if my mom was out-of-work and panhandling to get enough for us to live on.
We took so much for granted...
