VR suspends train travel between Finland and Russia

Finnish state-owned railway company VR has announced it will suspend all services to and from Russia.

The high-speed Allegro service runs twice-daily between Saint Petersburg and Helsinki.

VR told business daily Kauppalehti on Thursday that it was willing to put a stop to Allegro traffic if the government deemed the operations unnecessary.

On Friday Helsingin Sanomat reported that the Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering, Tytti Tuppurainen (SDP), told VR on Thursday that Allegro train traffic to Russia was no longer appropriate.
