A top prosecutor who abruptly left the Manhattan DA's office said in his resignation letter there's 'no doubt' that Trump committed 'numerous' felonies
One of the two top prosecutors who suddenly left the Manhattan district attorney's office last month said in his resignation letter that he believes former President Donald Trump is guilty of "numerous" felonies, The New York Times reported.
"The team that has been investigating Mr. Trump harbors no doubt about whether he committed crimes he did," the prosecutor, Mark Pomerantz, said in his resignation latter, according to The Times.
Pomerantz and Carey Dunne, the other senior prosecutor who was leading the DA's criminal investigation into the Trump Organization's business dealings, resigned in February after the new district attorney, Alvin Bragg, expressed doubts about moving forward with a case against the former president.
Pomerantz said in his resignation letter, dated February 23, that Trump was in fact "guilty of numerous felony violations" and that it would be a "grave failure of justice" to not hold him accountable for his actions, according to The Times.

(26,604 posts)It doesn't make sense to drop a case when the two top investigators have found the evidence they need.
ForgedCrank
(2,442 posts)is likely the snag. They say nothing of evidence, they just say they are convinced he committed felonies. That won't work in court.
The good news is that they are continuing the investigation, so let's hope they are able to come up with something of substance that can actually be proven.

(16,444 posts)Perhaps Pomerantz is making his statement based on the evidence that he had access to!
Just because Bragg is "continuing" the investigation, doesn't mean that he's actually continuing the investigation!
ForgedCrank
(2,442 posts)disagree with any of what you said, it's just a sad truth that solid evidence is required.
If he submits this with inadequate evidence, he can't just keep going back and doing it over and over again until one finally sticks with a grand jury. I don't think we really know for sure if he is trying to squash this for nefarious reasons, or if it is the evidence issue. It's just worth considering was my only real point. My hope is that he is on the trail, but holding back until he has something solid enough to survive the scrutiny of the courts.

NEW YORK Alvin Bragg has been elected Manhattans first Black district attorney.
The 48-year-old Democrat easily defeated Republican Thomas Kenniff on Tuesday to join a wave of progressive, reform-minded prosecutors in several big U.S cities.
DAMN, New York, get it together!

(4,832 posts)There were 8 candidates. The person who came in second won 31% of the vote; the other 6 split the remainder.
None of the 8 candidates had a household name that would automatically carry them to victory. In each candidate's case, at least 66% of the voters did not support them.
The winner of the Democratic primary was going to win the general. That's how Bragg came to be elected.

(4,927 posts)He's going back on a promise he made to voters. There was only 3% difference between him and the second place candidate during the primary so that promise might have made the difference in his win. (The winner of the Dem primary was expected to win the election). At a minimum he owes voters an explanation for his actions.

(4,927 posts)Bragg, who will be sworn into office on January 1, said he hasn't been briefed on the facts of the Trump case, which is before a state grand jury. But he indicated he has no plans to disrupt the investigation he's inheriting even as he also wants to focus on his own agenda.
"This is obviously a consequential case, one that merits the attention of the DA personally," Bragg said in a recent interview over lunch in Harlem.
Carey Dunne, general counsel to the current District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. who argued successfully before the Supreme Court to get Trump's taxes, has agreed to continue on the case, people familiar with his decision told CNN. Bragg said he would like Mark Pomerantz, a highly regarded attorney with deep knowledge of financial investigations who was recruited by Vance to steer with the investigation, to also stay.
"It's hard for me to evaluate not knowing the facts, but just having worked on lots of investigations that are complex, I can say that you've got two very good lawyers that have been looking at it for a while. I think it would be a disservice to Manhattan to lose them," Bragg said.

that those prosecutors resignation letters be kept out of the purview of FOIA requests.
Troublingly, the NY DA's office is refusing to release the letters, claiming that the letters contain "too much information" and could compromise an ongoing investigation. This claim rings hollow.
He stepped in it with this. Big time.
