LTTE point: why government is not a business

This letter to the editor is to be printed in Saturday's newspaper:

Romney would run U.S. for shareholders, profit

Much has been made of Mitt Romney's supposed business acumen, but here's what will really happen if he's elected. He will do what business executives always do. He will close non-profit making ventures (think Medicare, Social Security, health care for the poor) and maximize major shareholder profits. I think it's pretty clear who are the major shareholders in a successful Romney campaign. But aside from that, the federal government is not a business. Its purpose is to ensure that everyone plays by the same rules, that the rights of all are protected, that the opportunity for economic prosperity is maximized and made available to all who work for it, and that the nation is properly defended and well represented throughout the world. All this, regardless of where the profit centers lie.
