Virginia GOP insists students be taught about the Lincoln/Frederick Douglass debate

Anna Yonas @annayonas
Virginia’s proposed social studies reform legislation is terrible for myriad reasons, but the assertion that the Lincoln-Douglas debates were between Lincoln and Frederick Douglass is a new level of historical inaccuracy. https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp60

BlueParrotBooks @BlueParrotBooks 5m
While prohibiting teaching students the evils of slavery, the book burning crowd in the Virginia @GOP want students to read the first debate between Abraham Lincoln and FREDERICK Douglass! https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?221+ful+HB781

just looks like a smug ass. A life of privilege and entitlement(?) Maybe unfair to judge a book by its cover, and haven't heard of him until twenty minutes ago.

9. Lincoln and Douglass did meet

and they had several disagreements in the early days, so maybe you could call it a debate. But I'd go with sheer ignorance and someone who has no idea who Stephen Douglas was, or the significance of his debates with Lincoln.

OTOH, I'd put Douglass's memoirs on the reading list

And I had no idea it was Frederick, not Stephen, that my debate was named after. Boy do I feel dumb, lol.

19. Well, maybe

His asanine statement was “I am very proud now that we have a museum on the National Mall where people can learn about Reverend King, so many other things,” Trump said. “Frederick Douglass is an example of somebody who’s done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more, I notice.”

Sounds as if he thought Douglass would do more. Clear he has no clue.

16. I wonder if this was partly unconscious wishful thinking.

Frederick Douglasss being a POC and essentially arguing for slavery must be one of the most wished for dreams of people like Wren Williams.

18. :) Just had to confirm (!) that F. Douglass argued for eliminating slavery,

both as a goal in itself and as necessary to the preservation of the union. He wasn't ambiguous about it. He was also big on allowing black men to enlist in the Union forces to fight against slavery.

20. Those toads were obviously confused by two historical figures having similar names.

That's where the similarity ends, of course, but it doesn't stop them from wishing or even outright lying.

And there wouldn't be time for English, Math, Science, PE, or anything else.

34. too late

...Wren Williams owns the kerfuffle which put the spotlight on Virginia GOP's 'critical race theory' false flag at the heart of the legislation which would ban conversations about the United States’ racial history in Va. classrooms.

He was Trump's election attorney, ffs, so maybe we should give it a minute before rallying to exonerate him.
