My 89-year-old dad has Covid

We all tried so hard to keep him safe. But he forgot his mask when he went to the store.

He was in pain yesterday and called for help. It apparently triggers his shingles nerve damage and it was so bad I wondered if he was having a heart attack or just needed to go to the ER. But, knowing he was triple vaxxed and careful and from being around him all the time - I didn’t mask at his house. Forced him to the drive through testing and dammit if he doesn’t have it. 😳

Now I’m quarantined at his house with his grumpy a$$.

Aside from his pain, he says it’s like a bad cold. So that’s good.

Just ironic that we’ve tried so hard to keep him safe and he’s the Typhoid Mary that will have given it to me. I get tested tomorrow. 🤦‍♀️

4. Omicron sucks, it's so transmissible, but it's less deadly.

Hopefully he has that kind and won't need hospitalization. Hope if you get it (sounds likely) you will have no to mild symptoms.

16. This "less deadly" Omicron is filling up the hospitals.

US as a country is full of overweight people with pre-existing conditions.

21. The vast majority of those being hospitalized are Unvaxxed.

Omicron IS less deadly - not as hard on the lungs.

So he has a fighting chance, even at 89.

17. If it's possible to get him Pfizer's pills or monoclonal antibodies I would go for it.

My relative died despite being vaxxed and boosted.

25. My 3x vaxxed, 85-year old father got antibodies

after getting Delta just prior to the Omicron explosion. his doctor also gave them to his GF, even though she never tested or felt sick!

its a good idea for any elderly people.

8. I am on lockdown until I have a test kit at home

The new Pfizer pill apparently blocks 89% of deaths if started within 5 days of symptoms. So once the pills are available and I have a test kit in hand I will reengage. I am at relatively high risk so I am being cautious. Fortunately I work at home on the internet so a lockdown works for me. I hope his dad is ok.

12. LOL...Tell him that he shouldn't talk..

Seriously, when I got it, I held back on the talking, but that's just me. I get laryngitis and bronchitis too easily.

19. :) Sounds like you may be a consolation to a sick old guy.

Stay well. Just told my husband about the shingles involvement, not exactly thrilled to hear it since he's prone also. But thanks for the info.

11. My 89 yo Mother in law just recovered from it

She has a blocked aorta (yeah, she's on her way out already)
She went to the hospital thinking it was her aorta, but was diagnosed with Covid. She was in the hospital for 5 days. However, she's been the the hospital 3 times since November 1st for her heart. Hubby and I both got it because she and the rest of the family insisted on a huge party for Christmas...(I know. It does not make sense. But in his family when someone is gonna die, they have huge parties. They piled about 20 of them in my mom's ICU room in 2014. My dad who was alive at the time said, "If I'm dying, do not allow them near"..LOL )

18. You will in all likelihood test+ 3-5 days after exposure. It'll be pretty strange

if you don't get it, being Omicron and all.

Sorry this happened to both of you.

Your father is still quite vulnerable to an unfavorable outcome due to his age so it's good you are there with him because stubborn old codgers tend to ignore their symptoms till it's way too late.

If you are able to get him monoclonal antibodies, please try to do so due to his age, even if they aren't working as well with Omicron, it probably couldn't hurt anything - if they have any and they'll let him have them.

Keep an eye on his blood oxygen level with a pulse oximeter.

Don't ignore heart arrhythmias or shortness of breath. DON'T ignore low oxygen readings thinking the oximeter must be wrong.

Best of luck to both of you.

20. Yep.

Being vaccinated and boosted doesn't guarantee a good outcome in high risk group. My vaccinated and boosted relative died. I don't know if it was an Omicron or Delta that killed my relative.

22. Sorry to hear that, truly. "Omicron isn't that dangerous" crap has

got to stop. Vulnerable remain so, and there will still be instances of healthy younger persons who die with this disease in not insignificant numbers.

It's NOT a cold. I wish the pundits would quit spouting that narrative, as it's merely fueling the spread.

27. I forgot my mask on a visit to Walgreen's three days before Christmas.

I was in a hurry and there were a lot of last minute shoppers there.

I got lucky. No apparent symptoms.

I think this is the first time I did this since the pandemic started.

If you forgot yours don't go in.
