Not that it matters much in Indiana, but I asked a friend why they were voting for Romney...

He answered that Mitt better represented his views.

We have had numerous conversations. He believes that taxes should be raised, that the US spends far too much on defense, and that it is not up to the government to create jobs.

He even acknowledged that Romney lies, "but all politicians do".

Romney changes his "plan" on every issue, as often as he changes his magic underwear. What the hell is left?
I just don't get it.

1. Romney is a white male. That's all he's got. That's it. That's his appeal.

That is why his voters back him. They don't want to vote for an African-American.

is apathy, plain and simple. There are a lot of apathetic people these days who just say, "well everyone does it, I don't like it but, oh well."

They don't want to take a stand because they don't want to stand out or stand up for anything. It's a kind of rationalism of everything to make it all go away and leave them alone.

I personally have nothing in common with such people.

4. I have a pretty intelligent SIL who voted for Obama last time

but is voting for Mittwit this time because she claims Obama doesn't understand economics. I tried asking what she meant since the market was up and unemployment was down but she insisted he didn't understand economics. She works for a big corporation so I can only surmise that someone there has been feeding her lines about them going under if Obama wins. It is so dang maddening.

are complete idiots or think it's a football game.

It's simple:

Group 1: If you think the Earth is flat, Darwin was working for Satan, Your church tells you who to vote for, you're frightened of female (or any) sexuality, you're horrified by rap music and naked boobs on HBO, you think the sanctity of your marriage or divorce or secret affair will be negatively impacted by same sex couples you've never met being able to get married, and/or you blame your economic troubles on people different than you takin' yer stuff, you're gonna vote for the (R).

Group 2: If you're a billionaire and it chafes your nads to pay taxes, or you're a polluting mega-corporation and it chaps your hide to not be able to set the river on fire like you were able to do in the good old days, you're gonna vote for the (R) ...and, buy lots of airtime to convince the members of Group 1 to do the same, i.e. vote against their actual, real-world interests.

Group 3: Everyone else; the sane people, the critical thinkers, the fair play people, the folks who want a livable country with clean air and water, good roads and infrastructure, and top-notch (or at least better) schools... the people who believe in science, people who don't believe "smaller government" should mean "so small that Todd Akin can fit a little policeman in your underwear" etc. will vote for the (D).

Indiana Klan

QUOTE:

The Indiana Klan rose to prominence beginning in the early 1920s after World War I, when ethnic Protestants felt threatened by social and political issues, including changes caused by decades of heavy immigration from southern and eastern Europe. By 1922 the state had the largest organization nationally, and its membership continued to increase dramatically under the leadership of D.C. Stephenson. It averaged 2,000 new members per week from July 1922 to July 1923, when he was appointed as the Grand Dragon of Indiana. He led the Indiana Klan and other chapters he supervised to break away from the national organization in late 1923.

Indiana's Klan organization reached its peak of power in the following years, when it had 250,000 members, an estimated 30% of native-born white men. By 1925 over half the elected members of the Indiana General Assembly, the Governor of Indiana, and many other high-ranking officials in local and state government were members of the Klan. Politicians had also learned they needed Klan endorsement to win office.

The Indiana KKK may have virtually disappeared as a public entity since their high water mark in 1926-1927, but the underlying hate and racism in a large segment of the Indiana white population has not.

Check out the map entitled "Population of white male residents of each Indiana county who belonged to the Klan during the 1920s".
