Why does Romney keep getting away with the 'Syria is Iran's route to the sea' line?

Ok, so, let's give the benefit of the doubt that he does in fact mean the Mediterranean.

ROUTE FOR WHAT? Oil and gas? All those pipelines go through Turkey or Azerbaijan. All of them. Iran has no economic or geopolitical influence on the Med. It doesn't physically contact Syria at all. You have to go through Iraq or Turkey just to get to Syria.
