I highly recommend Sympthsical's excellent analysis of the trial

The Rittenhouse verdict should not have been a surprise

https://www.democraticunderground.com/100216067887

I did not follow the actual trail but relied on the news so everything was new to me.

Wanted to add that what we are left is the fact that in many states - all of them? - individuals can walk in the streets as “neighborhood watch” or “helping control the riot” or “medics” and shoot and kill someone and will not be charged.

I believe the judge removed the shooter's intention for being there. I am still struck by the fact that he went there as a vigilante and set up a scene where anyone who was acting to protect others from a AR-15 toting teenager would be accused of assault. We are now through the looking glass - all open carry AR-15 shooters are innocent.

The shooters status as vigilante outweighs everyone else.

That law defines a dangerous weapon as being one with a barrel of less than 16 inches. The rifle in question had a barrel longer than that.

Slam dunk.

Wisconsin statute 29.304(3)(b) states: "No person 14 years of age or older but under 16 years of age may have in his or her possession or control any firearm".

6. jury believed Shittenhouse acted in self defense -- you cannot just shoot blindly

It's critical to understand that. Firstly, there are numerous open carry states :

https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/open-carry-states

You can carry in many other states too, but there will be local regulations to consider.

In all three instances the jury believed the evidence indicated Shittenhouse was acting in self defense. Our news professionals have obviously described a different story, but ultimately the jury saw what they saw and the prosecution was unsuccessful in portraying Shittenhouse as the instigator.

What you should be left with is this:

'Individuals can cross state lines, walk in the streets as “neighborhood watch” or “medic” and open carry, put out fires in public spaces, and shoot someone in self defense, as long as it's in accordance with all related state and local laws.'

and perhaps this:

'If I attempt to take a gun away from someone, chase after a person who has a gun, kick or hit a person who has a gun, or point a gun at a person who has a gun, they might shoot me and successfully claim self defense.'

And honestly that's something we should have understood before this trial. The only matters in question were whether Shittenhouse acted in self defense and the jury decided yes, against the broader narrative we've gotten from media professionals over many months. Probably the only reason we're so angry is the media sold us on a different outcome so hard. It's almost like they want us to be in a state of rage.
