Her hubby got his 2nd covid shot a few weeks ago, but he always get a flu shot as well. But he wanted to wait a few weeks after his second dose. I was considering getting it before I got my booster next month. This is what brought this conversation up. Anyway, he went to Walgreens and got his shot, and the next day he wasn't feeling at all good. He felt deathly sick for almost a week and couldn't get out of bed. So he called Walgreens and asked what the hell was going on with this flu shot they gave him. They told him they were trying to get a hold of him all week because they accidentally gave him a covid shot instead!
Like Jesus man, that seriously kicked his immune system into hyperdrive and made him extremely sick. Like shit how did they mix up a covid and flu shot up? Like I'm thinking of holding off on that flu shot now lol just get my booster, continue to wear my mask. I'm sure I can avoid the flu like last year like that. Truly scary!

(10,156 posts)I got my shots from CVS. Plan on going there again. Just scary someone mixing up the shots like that.

(16,357 posts)The pharmacies do a lot of different vaccinations these days, not all of which would be suitable for any random patient. I'm sure that administering the wrong shot could have disastrous results in some cases. There is no excuse for being that careless!

(149,580 posts)I would not delay my flu shot, however.
What I would do is tell the pharmacist what happened to your friend's husband and make them aware that you're worried about this happening to you. If they're at all conscientious, they will be careful. You could probably get them to show you what medication you'd be getting.
But of course, this is your decision. The flu is no joke. You could delay it a bit. And make sure that what they're giving you IS a flu shot!
Best of luck!

(10,156 posts)Just kinda scary to think someone can make that mistake! That was a first for me in all this. A mix up in shots. Like damn.

(8,690 posts)A family with little kids were all given covid shots when they came in for flu shots and another pharmacy (no longer allowed to give shots) divided adult shots into 3 shots and gave it to 110 kids instead of giving them the kids formulation. All the formulations have different cap colors - might ask pharmacist what color cap your shot is coming from.

(14,489 posts)If I'm recalling correctly, the booster is one-half the dosage of the first one. They must have given that fellow a full dose, so that adds up to 2-1/2 doses rather than 1-1/2 doses.
Hoping to get off my arse this week and get my flu shot! Also need to get to a doctor and get a script for a shingles booster.

Seems I recall they're recommending a booster for the J&J vaccine now as well. Mine is Moderna but not due until early December.

(7,517 posts)We don't know what COVID vaccine he was given, but the Moderna ones have a habit of hitting people like a truck. The Pfizer ones can make people some miserable for a day or two as well, but not to the same extent as Moderna.
The fact that the person in question received a third dose after "a couple of weeks" instead of the recommended six months may or may not also have a role as well.

(58,785 posts)getting too much vaccine can be dangerous and would only suggest talking to Walgreen's about this reported incident and to discuss concerns. Also one's own physician if necessary since, of course, not being adequately vaccinated is what we need to be afraid of.

I discussed getting my flue shot with my booster with my druggist and together we decided to wait 2 weeks to get the senior flue shot. I told him I go to the CDC web site and check on the map to see if we are in a high rate area every week and we are not, so risk is low. Plus Im still sheltering in place. Wearing a mask and staying home for the year, Ive not even had a mild cold for a record amount of time. Also the flu shot wears out with time. One year I got my shot very early in the fall. Ended up with a mild case in April, so I have been waiting until after Halloween. But I do watch those maps to be safe.
