The report from the Texas Department of State Health Services examined data from Jan. 15 to Oct. 1 and found that unvaccinated people were much more likely to get infected and die of the coronavirus than those who got their shots.
Of the nearly 29,000 covid-linked fatalities in Texas during that period, more than 85 percent were unvaccinated individuals. Nearly 7 percent of the deaths were among partially vaccinated people, while nearly 8 percent were fully vaccinated.
The figures highlight just how much more at risk the unvaccinated population has been this year: In all age groups, the states unvaccinated were 40 times more likely to die than fully vaccinated people. The study also found that the unvaccinated in all age groups were 45 times more likely to have a coronavirus infection than fully vaccinated people. It also looked closely at data from September and underlined the impact of the highly contagious delta variant, which fueled a surge in Texas, as it did in much of the country.....
Recent findings from the CDC similarly highlighted risks for the unvaccinated. A CDC study published in September found that people who were not fully vaccinated in the spring and summer were more than 10 times more likely to be hospitalized and 11 times more likely to die of covid-19 than people who were fully vaccinated.

The report from Texas health officials underscores the risk that cases and death counts would spike among the unvaccinated, echoing the alarms that public health officials have been sounding throughout the year. The report, which Texas health officials say is the first statistical assessment of the real-world effect there of vaccines against the coronavirus, also highlights the impact in a state where Republican leaders have sharpened attacks on public health strategies throughout the pandemic. Last month, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) banned any entity in the state from mandating vaccines for workers or customers.

(64,413 posts)They say 85% of COVID deaths were unvaxxed. 7% partially vaxxed, 8% fully.
That's 85:15, or 5.67 to 1.
That's not 40 times.
From everything else I've seen, 40 to 60 times more likely to die, if unvaxxed, seemed about right.
But, the numbers in the snip don't square with 40x.
One or the other has to be wrong.

(5,969 posts)but in the linked report it becomes clear that it's the rate per 100000 population (unvaccinated population vs fully vaccinated population) that is compared.
In a timeframe starting from September, it sank to a 20 times higher death rate for the unvaccinated.

(64,413 posts)And, even using the rate, it still doesn't make sense.
Shabby reporting.

DSHS reviewed vaccination, death and tests records from Jan. 15 to Oct. 1 to come up with the figures.
We have millions and millions of records that we had to go through for this analysis, said Dr. Jennifer Shuford, DSHSs chief epidemiologist.
According to the review, 7.7% of deaths and 3% of positive cases in the January - October time frame were in fully-vaccinated Texans.
We know that there's all these bad outcomes for actually getting COVID-19, but the complications from the vaccine are very few and impact very few people, Shuford said. What we hope is that people across Texas will understand the threat of COVID-19.
Vaccination rates have been lowest in those who are the youngest, but the younger Texans have seen the biggest benefits from being vaccinated.
