NPR got the tapes:
In addition to mapping out their national strategy, NRA leaders can also be heard describing the organizations more activist members in surprisingly harsh terms, deriding them as hillbillies and fruitcakes who might go off-script after Columbine and embarrass them. - PoliticusUSA
"Made that point earlier. I agree," says Makris. "The fruitcakes are going to show up." - NPR
Could you imagine if any democratic organization called their members fruitcakes and other derogatory names? Those members would flee and have every right to. But not these NRA hillbillies! They're sticking with the NRA brand and proud to be labeled fruitcakes and basically pawns, by their own.

(2,114 posts)I suppose they think of their members as "suckers and losers" just like their ungodly Republican Casino-hustler-in-chief called our US troops "suckers and losers."
Disgusting Republican "values."

(82,849 posts)Anything that isn't fawning obeisance to the cult of gun nuts draws the hillbillies and fruitcakes like ants to honey. Even a criticism as mild as "That's not really true" to their latest whack job conspiracy theory brings the howlers in droves.

(7,838 posts)Stay tuned for more of the same old bullshit...coming to 2022 in the near future.
And DRUMPF has contempt for his own followers, the unwashed with whom he would never fraternize.
But back in my more Liberal *charitable* mode, its common for groups to try to distance themselves from or try to make more palatable its more fringe members like when the national organizers of Vietnam Vet marches on D.C. put out the word to ditch the surplus fatigues uniforms and wear neat civilian clothes.

(51,584 posts)the scum of the earth. When he got Covid he said he saw the silver lining...he wouldn't have to shake hands with any of "them". Years earlier he said that as long as he had Fux Ruse in his pocket all their GOP sheep would follow him to anywhere yet he is disgusted with his own base.

(5,680 posts)They won't give up the NRA even if Wayne LaPierre showed up loaded on crank, fondled their wives, attacking their children, and burned down their houses.
Single issue voters are just that. . .single issue. As long as you stroke their issue, they will go through Hell for you.

(32,633 posts)... from the manufacturers. They're just a lobby group with resourceful PR/media contacts. The NRA never cared about the rank-and-file "membership" and I'm sure that's why they ridiculed them.

(3,327 posts)It holds clout, it ghost-writes legislation and receives millions in donations from gun manufacturers such as Smith & Wesson and Beretta USA (these donations are not spare change, either: between 2005 and 2013, the NRA received over $50 million in industry contributions alone).
While their public missteps as of late are a leading indicator another will take its place, that's nothing I'd bet on anytime soon after realizing their membership grew (net, not gross) by 225,000 members this year alone.
