Outrage as McDonald’s CEO appears to blame parents of slain Chicago children

Chris Kempczinski said his comments about fatally shot children in text to Chicago mayor lacked ‘empathy and compassion’

McDonald’s chief executive, Chris Kempczinski, has sparked outrage after the emergence of a text exchange with the Chicago mayor, Lori Lightfoot, in which he appears to blame two Chicago parents whose children were fatally shot.

In the newly publicized texts between Kempczinski and Lightfoot from April, Kempczinski blamed the parents of 13-year-old Adam Toledo and seven-year-old Jaslyn Adams for their deaths.

Adams died in a shooting at a McDonald’s drive-thru one day before the text exchange. Toledo had been killed by a Chicago police officer weeks prior, with video later coming out showing that the child had his hands in the air.

“With both, the parents failed those kids which I know is something you can’t say. Even harder to fix,” wrote Kempczinski in a text to Lightfoot.

Lightfoot texted back, “Thanks, Chris. Great to see you in person. Such a great work space, and your folks were terrific. I said to Joe I would be happy to reach out to the operator to offer support. He and his team members have got to be traumatized. Terrible tragedy. Thanks again, Chris.”

The texts were obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request. Images of the correspondence were also posted in a Twitter thread about McDonald’s workers striking across the country.

McDonald’s protesters condemn CEO’s comments on Adam Toledo, Jaslyn Adams. ‘The CEO doesn’t understand or know our struggle.’

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski on Tuesday addressed comments he made in a text exchange with Mayor Lori Lightfoot appearing to blame the parents of two Chicago children fatally shot earlier this year, saying his comments lacked “compassion and empathy.”

Kempczinski sent the messages, which sparked a protest Wednesday after they were recently made public, after meeting with Lightfoot at McDonald’s Chicago headquarters in April. In the texts, he said the parents of children shot in separate shootings “failed those kids.”

One happened the day before Kempczinski and Lightfoot met: a shooting in the drive-thru lane at a McDonald’s on the West Side that killed 7-year-old Jaslyn Adams. Three weeks prior, 13-year-old Adam Toledo was shot and killed by a Chicago police officer during a foot chase in Little Village.

“With both, the parents failed those kids which I know is something you can’t say. Even harder to fix,” Kempczinski wrote in the message.

The one in my town is closed half the time and are offering up to $20/hr to start DOE of course. In fact they only have the drive-thru open, been that way since before the pandemic.

I don't consider that shit to be anything relative to food so I avoid going there.

Two months after federal authorities posted a $10,000 reward for his arrest, the second man accused of fatally shooting 7-year-old Jaslyn Adams as she sat in a McDonald’s drive-thru on the West Side has been found.

In a motion filed Tuesday, federal prosecutors disclosed that 21-year-old Devontay Anderson had been “located and arrested” in Chicago on Monday. He faces criminal charges stemming from the April 18 shooting that left Adams dead and her father wounded.

Anderson and another man, 21-year-old Demond Goudy, had allegedly targeted Adams’ father in the shooting. According to Cook County prosecutors, the men fired dozens of rounds into Adams’ vehicle in broad daylight at a McDonald’s in the Homan Square neighborhood.

Jaslyn Adams was shot multiple times and died, while her father was struck once and survived.

Having your kid in the car during an assassination attempt on you is probably not good parenting.
