General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsAlmost unanimously, Republicans in the House are voting to NOT hold Steve Bannon in contempt.
If they cannot hold this contemptuous criminal accountable, there is no hope for them. They have a chance to stand up for the rule of law and the Constitution and they fail the test.
We could only hope their constituencies see what they are doing and hold them accountable in the next election.
Their minds have locked shut.

(7,887 posts)The committee has that authority already.
Congress members may choose to ignore criminal activity according to personal tastes.
However, observed criminal activity and knowledge of same must be reported to and referred to DOJ for investigation and prosecution. That's in Congressional Rules and federal law.

(7,887 posts)Surely that is clear by now. By extension anything they want to do, or choose not to do, must be equally immune from due process.
Most of the current GOP members were recruited to the party precisely because they believe their party and their personal beliefs are more important that the country is. They are part of a trend in GOP thinking wherein becoming elected elevates them to a special class of people who are above the rules in every sense. It is genuinely a cult-like faith which is reinforced by the blandishments and money of their owners and patrons.
Greed and personal power are the primary forces motivating the GOP at most levels of government these days. I state an observable fact here.

I would have expected more to vote against Bannon. They act as if he is Donald Trump ??

(22,112 posts)to now? This should scare democrats and independents alike, and some few republicans too, at their blatant attempt to escape the rule of law, the power of Congressional summons. Congress just weakened itself immeasurably (republicans especially). And Bannon isn't even an elected member of any party too...

(24,282 posts)Bannon will be held in contempt. Now the next move is Garland's. If he refuses to charge Bannon, we might as well move to Mexico.

Garland, the next step in the legal process is for him to present it to a grand jury. After the grand jury's vote, Garland can send US marshalls to arrest Bannon. With a grand jury indictment, there is no reason at all to believe that Garland will not have Bannon arrested - if Bannon is still in the country and not in hiding under the protection of one of his accomplices.
I see no reason at all to think that Garland will not present the case to a grand jury. I also see no reason why a grand jury would not indict Bannon. It is very cut and dried. He refused to comply with a Congressional subpoena. Therefore, he is in contempt of Congress.
Mr.Bill
(24,282 posts)that Trump committed multiple serious crimes while president, but I haven't seen Garland do anything about that. I hope he's working on it, but I'm beginning to have my doubts.
And my other worry is that no matter what happens, the Supreme Court will have a final decision on this in June of 2027.

(21,432 posts)because thst is an infringement on Congress' authority.
But they did take Nixon's case and he lost. Trump has even less grounds to stand on than Nixpn did and Bannon has none at all. Given the current conservative court, there is some reason for concern, but then they didn't rule in Trump's favor on the multiple cases he filed regarding his fraudulent election claim, so there is some hope.

(43,128 posts)They are siding with an insurrectionist against the Constitution of the United States, and against the legislature that was attacked on January 6. It is plain as day in terms that a 5 year old can understand. Democrats need to drive that message. This is it, right now. Rule of Law, or no accountability and sliding into dictatorship. This could even print in the elections in two weeks.
Write this day in your calendar. Republicans have crossed the Rubicon. Americans must recognize it.

Same with the House Republicans.
And if Steve Bannon attempted to help a violent prevention of a duly elected Democratic president from taking office? What did he do that any Republican member of the House wouldn't? Hell enough of them probably DID, that their chances of spending the rest of their lives free of incarceration probably depends on his keeping his mouth shut. Why should anyone expect them to vote for their own life sentences?
"Lock them up!" applies to Democrats only, any Republican knows that..............

(2,541 posts)No one, not even for the shortest amount of time measurable (zeptosecond) should fool themselves into thinking that somewhere inside any republican there is the whisper of a hint from the rumor of a thought that they should do the right thing concerning Bannon.
There no GOP bottom. I was surprised yesterday when the news made a thing out of all the GOP voting no to having just a debate about the right to vote. Then to see Chuck Schumer on the floor wanting just to make clear no GOP voted for the bill....I mean what is the deal where does this continued lingering idea that the GOP is going to reach an end point and turn around back to reality and govern in a mature and sensible way...its not gonna happen

The Republicans have become the Russia party
No longer a political party capable of governing even if they wanted to, it's just a corrupt gang of totalitarian thugs that should be dismantled and sent to the junkyard.
